Boomer & Gio
Hour 2 - Todd Monken As OC Boosts Jax, McVay On Playing Chicago, Lots Of Your Calls
15 Jan 2026
Chapter 1: What is the main topic discussed in this episode?
It's the Boomer and Geo podcast from WFAN. Boomer and Geo coming to you live from the Bill Ford Tough Studio on the Fan and CBS Sports Network on John Harbaugh Day. 2026 as Harbaugh and the Giants inch closer to getting that contract signed and he's going to be the next head coach. Of the New York Giants, got Mike Garofalo and Ian Rappaport. They're part of the insiders.
Chapter 2: What are the latest developments regarding Todd Monken joining the Giants?
Saying that Todd Munkin most likely will be the offensive coordinator for John Harbaugh here in New York with Jackson Dart. Obviously, those guys worked together the last number of years in Baltimore and had a ton of success with Lamar Jackson when he was healthy. And this is, of course, someone that he trusts. They had some great years together down there.
Yeah, so I think that's a really good one. And he's actually won with backup quarterbacks every now and again. He has. But the offense is not going to be exactly what they're running down in Baltimore, I don't think. I mean, they'll have Jackson be a part of some of this RPO stuff. But Todd Munkin has a very good reputation, and it didn't go well this year.
And remember, we heard him on a podcast after this whole thing went down. Yeah, he had that scratchy voice, and he was ripping everybody, and it was unbelievable.
So I think, again, John's going to hire the guys that he's going to feel comfortable with, that this is what they all do, and people that he trusts, people that are going to have his back and going to do exactly what he wants them to do and also understand how to run practice.
Yeah, and I think that John Harbaugh and Todd Munkin are really smart football guys, and they're not going to force some sort of system that they just like down Jackson Dart's throat. They're going to use the things that he's good at and build a system around that. So there's very, very encouraging stuff there.
Now, you're thinking, all right, he's bringing the offensive coordinator from Baltimore. Would he bring the defensive coordinator from Baltimore? The last two years, the defensive coordinator for the Baltimore Ravens is Zach Orr. He's a former player.

Chapter 3: How did Todd Monken and Lamar Jackson perform together in Baltimore?
He spent three years playing for the Baltimore Ravens, and he's been the D coordinator the last two years. So I don't know if he's going to bring Zach Orr. They had some issues last year defensively. They blew some games. I'm going to say that he's going to go in a different direction with the D coordinator. Imagine if it was Rex Ryan. Imagine if he brought Rex Ryan back.
As the defensive coordinator of the New York Giants? You want him in that building? That'd be crazy. I do. Wouldn't you? I don't know what their relationship is. I really don't.
They work together.
I gotta believe it's good. How could it not be? By the way, just so you know... Forget this year for one second. You know, Lamar was hurt this year. The previous two years, they won 25 games together. Yep. Todd Munkin and Lamar Jackson. Lamar had thrown 65 touchdown passes over those two years. 41 touchdowns in 2024. I mean, he was up and down the field, 4,100 yards passing.
Obviously, the running is a part of Lamar's game. I mean, he was a multiple dual-thread quarterback, and Todd Munkin was calling the plays. Yeah. So that bodes well. You can't just go by recency bias about what just happened this year. No, I mean, he was hurt a lot of the year, and obviously their relationship had crumbled with John Harbaugh and Lamar Jackson.
Yeah, I mean, you think about Jackson Dart right now, it's got to be absolutely thrilled. I mean, to be Jackson Dart this morning, he's thinking, I got an opportunity to be the king of this town. I really do. The Giants quarterback who brings them back, man. I know, but winning football games makes you the king of the town. He really has an opportunity right now. Everything is lined up for him.
It's perfect. This is the opposite of being drafted by a bad organization who doesn't know what the hell is going on. He's not going to go through four head coaches and four different offensive systems. This should be it for him. These guys should be married together for the next 10 years. This should be Sean McDermott and Josh Allen. This should be Joe Burrow and Zach Taylor.
That's what this should be. Let's go to Bean in Bloomfield.
What's going on, Bean? What's going on, guys? First time caller, long time listener.

Chapter 4: What does Jameis Winston say about the Giants' coaching needs?
I don't know if it will be the defense coordinator. I haven't seen anything about that yet. But, you know, the defense coordinator that comes in here is ā it's an interesting group of players that are here. And I would think that they're going to spend some money on defense this offseason.
And I would imagine they're going to spend a lot of time in the draft on defense, and they probably will try to pick up another wide receiver somewhere. Yeah, and I wonder, a couple of guys that I wonder if they're going to be here, part of this new regime is Kayvon Thibodeau and Dexter Lawrence.
Those guys are probably going to want to stay now with everything going on, but those are two up-in-the-air type of guys right now. Let's go to Bob in Roseland. What's going on, Bob? Good morning, guys. I'm just curious. Any chance of Wink Martindale coming back?
He didn't coach at Baltimore.
I don't know. I mean, obviously they did work together.

Chapter 5: What insights does Sean McVay provide about playing in Chicago?
Wink loved being a Giants coordinator, just didn't love Brian Dable. I don't know. I also don't know what Joe Shane and Wink Martindale ā what their relationship was. I don't know if ā remember, it ended really bad. I don't know if John Mara or Chris Mara, the tissues won't wink back. It was ugly at the end there.
He stormed out of the building and everything else, and now if they believe that was all Brian Dable's fault, maybe they'd welcome him back, but it ended ugly here. But it's happened before. Coaches come back to places, and, you know, it's ā I don't know. Would it shock me if that happened? No, it wouldn't, but ā And, you know, John is ā again, he probably went in there.
And I don't think there was any ā that the Giants said you can't bring in somebody. You know what I mean? They probably told them, whoever you want to bring in here is your coaching staff. That's part of it, and we're going to support that, and we're going to support that financially. And, you know, if it includes Wink Martindale, bring Wink back. Bring him back. Bring him here.
Make the time a fifth. Tim in Dutchess County. What's going on, Tim? Good morning, boys. How we doing? Good, Tim. What's up? Good. Quick question on that Andrew Marchand podcast. Is there any explanation as to why Craig can leave early every day? I'm going to have to listen. All right. Good. Does he leave early? It's a two-to-seven shift. Yeah, I've listened to a lot of the show.
I haven't listened to the end of it. Like yesterday, we were driving back from Westchester Country Club, and I listened to the guys the entire time, but I got home about 3.50, so obviously the show still had a long way to go. I had not... hear the end of it, does he leave before 7 o'clock? They did not address that in the podcast. I don't know, Al, does he?
You seem to know everything around here.
Yeah, I'm with you. I've tuned in prior to 6 o'clock, so I'm not sure.
I mean, so he has another job that he does, right? Which is in the morning. So he does that job in the morning, and then he comes here and does his job and then leaves early?
Yeah, that I don't know.

Chapter 6: What are the expectations for Jackson Dart as the Giants' quarterback?
At least. $25 a year? I don't know if they'll go that high, but if he's going to be one of the highest paid, I don't know what Andy Reid's making. You would think that Andy Reid would be the highest-paid coach in the league right now. Yeah. Right? Yes. Kyle Shanahan, maybe? No, it's got to be Andy Reid. Sean McVay? It's got to be Andy Reid. Well, it should be Andy Reid. It doesn't mean it is.
Tomlin was making $20 million, I think. And yeah. He walked away. He did walk away. By the way, it was very interesting reading about the whole Tomlin situation, is that there's an option for Tomlin's 2027 contract. And who owns the option for that are the Pittsburgh Steelers.
So it's funny how the NFL, they do have rules regarding coaches stepping down and then wanting to take another job and whether or not there's going to be compensation tied to him taking another job, given the contract situation with the Steelers. So it's really a one-year deal with a team option. Okay. So if the team hires a coach, they're not picking up the 27 option of Mike. No.
Unless, I'm trying to think, if they picked up the option technically, then maybe some compensation could be required next year if Mike wants to get back into coaching. By the way, I was listening to the warm-up show this morning, and I was surprised, you guys. Jerry brings up, well, now it's Tomlin watch for next year with the Jets if they go 3-14 again.
So you're going to tell me that Mike Tomlin takes a year off, and let's say he's available after that and has a choice of every job in the world. He's going to go to the New York Jets after back-to-back 3 and 14 seasons to work with Darren Mooji and Woody Johnson? It all depends on how that draft turns out this year.

Chapter 7: How are Giants fans reacting to the coaching changes?
Well, Arch Manning's not going to go to the Jets either. Are you kidding me? I'm saying you could have the first pick in the 27 draft. Well, no, they'll screw it up somehow. They'll end up at the third pick. The only way, the Jets have a path out. They do. But the only way they do is the draft. That is it. And overpaying guys, which I hope they don't do in free agency.
But Darren Muji has an opportunity to rebuild this team through the draft. He's got all the picks. That's the only way out. The only way out. Let's say they win three games again next year. Yeah. And they do have the number one pick. Mm-hmm. What do you think happens to the coach? I think that they're going to do whatever they can.
Let's say Arch has a great year and he's a consensus number one overall pick. I think that they would do whatever it takes to get Arch Manning here and ask him, the Manning camp, who would you like to be the coach? That's what I think would happen. Oh, I see. Okay. You know what I mean? Yeah.
That's where Woody Johnson's just got to step away or something, like Christopher handled it because he's just a little smoother, and say, listen, we know we're in an unattractive place. We understand that. We've got self-awareness. What is it going to take? Tell me who to hire. Tell me. We'll give you whatever you want, whatever coach in the world. We'll hire Cooper Manning, for God's sake.
We'll hire his dad. All right, so let's just wait to see what happens this time next year. Yeah. Because we're right in the middle of the fire right now. Yeah. And, you know, depending on what the Jets do next year, I mean, nobody's going to think. I bet you their win total next year will be under four again. Probably be four and a half. Yeah, most likely.
Depending on who their quarterback ends up being. Imagine Jackson. They've got to play Drake May. They've got to play Josh Allen and whoever Miami ends up deciding to hire as a coach. Yeah. Jackson Dart and John Harbaugh with the Giants, Mike Tomlin and March Manning for the Jets. One of them we know has come true. Let's go to Tom and Merrick. What's going on, Tom?
Hey, guys. First phone call I've been able to make in 24 hours with Verizon. And finally, I get through to you guys. So this is great. But what I wanted to say was, so unfortunately, I'm a Jet fan. And here we go again. We're always the bridesmaid, never the bride.

Chapter 8: What challenges do the Jets face in the upcoming season?
We're always a year off. We're always a pickoff. It's horrible to wake up as a Jet fan today. We wanted this to not work out for the Giants so bad because as bad as it's been the last couple years, at least the other team in New York has been here with us. And now we've got to sit here and listen to all the Giants fans who I'm not going to say I'm happy for.
Have a good day, guys. I'm going to bask in my sorrow a little more. All right, Tommy. By the way, two years ago, we were all feeling like this about the Jets when Aaron Rodgers decided to come here. And no one was talking about the Giants. Or three years ago.
Nobody was talking about the Giants. All the Jets.
I mean, when we did the first Boomer and Geo live and Joe Douglas was there, the Giants were not even a thought. It was all about the Jets. They were on hard knocks. They were going to Broadway shows. They were the talk not only of the town, of the country, and the NFL. And obviously we are here now. So you had your shot.
The other last exciting time with the Jets, and if I remember this correctly, I remember Zach Wilson taking his offensive lineman to Islander games. Is that right? Yeah, but why were we excited about that? Well, I mean, he was the second overall pick. He was the new quarterback. Yeah, but we didn't think they were going to win. That was prior to Aaron Rodgers getting here. That's right.
That's right. But we said, hey, look at him. He's taking his guys to a hockey game. He's involved. Sure. All that kind of stuff. Yeah, the Jets have to take the backseat for a while now. It's the Boomer and Geo podcast from WFAN. Hi, Boomer and Geo on the fan and CBS Sports Network. John Arbaugh agreeing to be the next head coach of the New York Giants.
Adam Schefter posted a little while ago, said the new foundation of the New York Giants. And he put four faces, pictures out there. Oh, four faces. Four faces of players. Of players. Well, sorry. One face is John Harbaugh. Then three players. Okay. Jackson Dart. Yes. I'm going to say Abdul Carter. No. No. Brian Burns. No. No. No. Scataboo. Malik Neighbors. You guys got them right there.
Scataboo and Malik Neighbors. And by the way, if I'm Tyrone Tracy, who had back-to-back thousand-yard seasons as a running back, that would annoy me. You're like, Scataboo was here for five seconds. He turned his ankle the wrong way. He banged his head into a bunch of walls, and you're telling me that that's the foundation more than me? But who put out that picture? Adam Schefter.
Yeah, so it wasn't the Giants that put that out. Yeah, I know, but I'd still be annoyed. It's Adam Schefter. I know, but I'd be like, Adam, come on. You're not paying attention here. Maybe he's not paying attention. But obviously everybody loves Cam Scadaboo, and that feels like a personality change with the Giants.
