TikToker Miriam Mullins, good morning and welcome.
Miriam Mullins 0:03
Good morning Brendan, how are you?
Brendan O'Connor 0:05
I'm good thanks. Miriam, you've been posting a lot lately about doing something that I think a lot of us find tricky which is learning to enjoy your own company, doing things on your own. Why did you decide you wanted to challenge yourself to do more things on your own?
Miriam Mullins 0:19
Because I think I suppose our generation, like the people in their 20s, like we all like obviously social media is like a massive part of our lives.

Why did Miriam decide to spend more time alone after turning 30?

Miriam Mullins 0:28
And I think it almost kind of makes you feel lonely because you're on social media all the time and like you're seeing all these people's lives. And I see you see what other people are doing and you kind of compare yourself that like actually like I would say this, that's like being an influencer. It actually is one of the loneliest jobs like ever because you're on your own. Yeah. Yeah, it is, definitely. Like, you're in your room filming videos and, like... You see all these amazing numbers on the screen on the phone, but it actually doesn't feel real because you're actually not seeing the people. So I kind of felt like for a while I was really, I was like just getting kind of lonely, to be honest with you.
Miriam Mullins 1:04
And I used to go away loads on my own before I did social media, like I'd go away to different countries and all that kind of stuff. So I kind of just wanted to bring that back because I turned 30 in December and I feel like I kind of lost myself a little bit. So I just kind of decided... Just I just kind of didn't really go out much. I stayed in the house a lot.

How does social media contribute to feelings of loneliness for influencers?

Miriam Mullins 1:25
I kind of does that to you a little bit. And I didn't really put myself out there as much as what I would have pre doing social media as a job. So I kind of wanted to get my spark back a little bit and just do that. And yeah, I went to New York by myself there recently. I went to London like I've just been kind of trying to go and do these things, push myself out of my comfort zone and just kind of learn to love my own company again.
Brendan O'Connor 1:49
Yeah. So before we get to the travel, I was looking at your TikTok and you were saying on one thing, you've gone to festivals, concerts, even the VIP style awards on your own, right? Yeah. And maybe this is a cork people thing as well. I'm kind of looking at that and there's something in our heads, isn't there? When you're going to things on your own, you're slightly thinking, am I a loser?
Miriam Mullins 2:12
Yeah, yeah, 100%. Like, I think going, especially going to an awards like that now when there's loads of people and you kind of almost have to force yourself to speak to people and you kind of feel like, oh, I hope now I'm not intruding or like I'm annoying or anything. Yeah. But like... You actually just kind of have to. And that's how you meet people and you make friends. Because if you go to these things with your group of friends, you're not going to put yourself out there to actually talk to new people and meet people. And I used to be really, really good at it. I used to just not care and chat to strangers and stuff.
Brendan O'Connor 2:44
And then you started thinking too much about it.
Miriam Mullins 2:46
Yeah, you go into a bubble kind of, you know.
Brendan O'Connor 2:49
Yeah.
Miriam Mullins 2:49
I kind of felt like I was really in a bubble and I was like, hey, I need to get out of this now because I used to be really chatty and, you know, I used to put myself out there an awful lot more than what I kind of would have in recent years. So I'm just trying to get that back a little bit. And I'm trying to encourage other people to do it as well on my social media and stuff. And I've had a lot of people message me saying, oh, yeah, I booked a flight there to Spain. I'm going away on my own for a few days. I'm so scared, but I'm just going to do it. And I'm like, it's the best thing you'll ever do.
Brendan O'Connor 3:17
Amazing. So traveling alone is kind of the ultimate solo challenge. So you were saying you went to New York recently. It was kind of last minute kind of thing, was it?
Miriam Mullins 3:27
It was, yeah, very last minute. I literally booked it on a Thursday and I went on a Sunday, sorry, so like four days in between, three, four days.
