It can make holidaying abroad in summer very tricky, but fear not, the travel expert Sarah Slattery is here with some sweat-free Coolcations. Can we start with where not to go over the next few weeks? If you haven't booked anything, but you are a bit heat averse and you want to get away.
Yeah, I mean, it's pretty hot everywhere. I think people are aware, but there are, you know... Most of the holiday resorts are kind of around 32 at the moment, which is probably bearable if you've got a sea breeze or a pool. The likes of South Italy, Sicily, some of the Greek islands are pushing kind of 35, even Mallorca 35, 36. So, I mean, I think the most important thing is like if you're near a beach and you have your pool, you know, obviously avoid the cities, you know, Rome or Athens or think about 37 at the moment. That would be horrific this time of year. But most of the time, even with the Greek islands, which get a bit of a tough time, they have those Meltemi winds that are really quite strong.
And they are cooling.
They really are. Like we went to Ireland happening in Greece a couple of years ago in August. And literally, like you wouldn't want to be, have a dodgy tummy on the boats. Like it's so strong, the wind. So they actually are quite cooling. So if you get a good spot, you know, even TripAdvisor, you know, if it's a nice location with a breeze near the sea, you know, it'll make it feel an awful lot cooler.
OK, but maybe avoid the cities. What's the hottest place you've ever been to, Sarah?
Ayers Rock I think in Australia a long time ago now but I'll never forget it it was 46 or 48 degrees or something like that we used to have to go out luckily sunrise over Ayers Rock was a thing because we'd go out at 6 in the morning come back at 10 and have a siesta like it was just it would have to be the sunrise wouldn't it yeah
Which destinations should heat-averse travelers avoid right now?
I mean, with those sort of temperatures at 46, OK, we don't want to go anywhere near 46. So looking at cooler holiday alternatives and somewhere I'm just back from, in fact, the Canary Islands. And I was quite surprised, actually, because I thought, oh, we're near the equator. We're so close to Africa. This is going to be scorching. But it was the same here as it was there, I'd say.
They don't get the extreme temperatures that we get in mainland Europe. So it's actually a really, really good option.
How hot are typical Mediterranean resorts this summer?
And a lot of the islands like Fort Ventura is actually called the windy island. All the windsurfing championships are there every year. Lanzarote always has a great breeze and they rarely get above 30 degrees because they're year round. The weather is good, but in the summertime, it's rarely above 30. So they're actually a really good surprising option for anyone looking for your typical kind of bucket and spade type holiday.
Yeah, the Lisbon coast is another one you're recommending.
Yeah, for something really, really nice, Cascais is gorgeous, real upmarket where the Portuguese royal family used to go on their holidays. And you've got Lisbon down the road, 30 minutes by train. So really nice, kind of you can have a beach or a city break. Again, rarely above 28 degrees in the summer months there as well.
Now, I mean, if you're looking, I mean, I'll always think about Scandinavia. And I think when people think of Caucasians and maybe getting away from those very hot continental resorts, they might think of the likes of Denmark. They might think of Finland. Are they good options?
Absolutely. You know, Sweden, we were just talking about it earlier. You know, there's so many islands, you know, people don't think about going island hopping in Sweden or island hopping in Norway, but it is a thing. Like the flights, Bergen was the biggest surprise to me in Norway.
