How did Diane Kelly first go viral after responding to online trolls?
My next guest went viral, not once, but twice in the past month when she posted two stories answering her online trolls. Diane Kelly, director and co-founder of LL Solutions, took to social media to share her thoughts about how difficult it can be to be a woman online. Diane, you're very, very welcome to the programme. Thanks a million. So... One of the videos which you posted recently struck a chord with quite a number of women, including presenter Carl Vorderman, Toni Collette and the singer Pink. I think it's been hit about 10 million times now. Why don't we have a quick listen to see what the fuss was all about?
Thank you for the lovely message telling me I look well over 60. Consider this a warning. If you come onto my page and you try to drag me down, I'll come back at you. If you come onto my page and try to drag anyone else down, I'll come back at you too. If you can't be nice to me or to other people, then stay away. Because as women, we can't win, can we? If we leave ourselves alone, we're all looking. If we get fillers at Botox, we're fake. Why can't we just do whatever the f*** we want? Let's work from the top down here. That farm head there you see, with the 36 worry lines, they're from sleepless nights I spent throughout my life. I had a very sick father for the first 20 years. Then I had a child who needed taming.
Then came bills, hormones, loves, worries, and about 200 other things throughout my life. So those 36 lines, they're well earned. Now let's move down. Those lines are on my eyes. They don't even begin to cover the tears I've cried, the people I've lost, the heartbreak I've survived, the days when those eyes never wanted to open. See those scars? They're from doctors cutting pieces out of me while nobody knew what was underneath. And those marionette lines, well, some people call them that. I call them environment resting bitch face clients. And I love them. I embrace them.
They're the very lines that keep women like you in your box. Well, it really got quite the reaction. I want to talk. There was a video that you posted before that. I'm going to get to your business in a minute.
What was the content and message of Diane’s viral ‘resting bitch face’ clip?
But there was a video you posted before that, which sort of led to that.
Correct.
And it was someone who I think contacted you in a private Facebook message. Yes. And what did she say to you?
She made a comment about my hair, that my hair looked terrible. Obviously, I'm new to social media. I only really started posting regularly. for myself from early April. And I post a huge amount of videos in regards to the works that we do. I'm a very hardworking woman.
You run an SME with over 40 people. I do, yeah.
And I'm very physically active on the road as well. We do specialist clear outs and all these different things. And I post that. I post the work we do. And I suppose me as a woman within this industry, working... In the property business.
Exactly.
working alongside all these men all the time who are fabulous and I had that particular week I had worked exceptionally hard and I was I would probably clock an average of 70 hours a week both in the office and on the road and I was at home one evening, probably just landing in the door at around nine o'clock, and this message came through on a private message from a lady. And her comment was, with all your talk about leading a business, could you not go and sort your hair out? And I looked at it and I closed it and I don't take any great notice. I mean, I'm 49 years of age. Life goes on. But it was in my head all night. And the following day, I went to work and done my thing. And that evening, we were in the middle of a refurb.
We were moving offices. So we were decking out our new offices ourselves. And I was out there that evening looking around and checking how we were looking, I suppose, time-wise. And Yeah, I just couldn't get it out of my head. And the reality for me was for seven days straight, I had posted videos of me as a woman and our team physically working hard. You know, we were, we are, we are full, you know, how do I word it?
