Chapter 1: What is the main topic discussed in this episode?
Dr. Laurie Santos from the Happiness Lab here. It's the season of giving, and this year my podcast, the Happiness Lab, is partnering with GiveDirectly, a nonprofit that provides people in extreme poverty with the cash they need as part of the Pods Fight Poverty campaign. Our goal this year is to raise $1 million, which will bring over 700 families out of extreme poverty.
Your donation will put cash directly in the hands of these families in need. And they'll get to decide how to use it, whether that's school transportation, purchasing livestock, or starting a business. Plus, if you're a first-time donor, your gift will be matched by giving multiplier, which means more money for those in need. Visit givedirectly.org slash happiness lab to learn more and to donate.
That's givedirectly.org slash happiness lab. Hi, I'm Radhida Vlukia, and I am the host of A Really Good Cry podcast. This week, I am joined by Anna Runkle, also known as the Crappy Childhood Fairy, a creator, teacher, and guide helping people heal from the lasting emotional wounds of unsafe or chaotic childhoods.
Talking about trauma isn't always great for people. It's not always the best thing. About a third of people who are traumatized as kids feel worse when they talk about it, get very dysregulated.

Chapter 2: What prompted Brooke to finally watch A Very Jonas Christmas?
Yeah, good.
Okay.
Then you get introduced to a Joe Jonas love interest, who apparently is another famous actress or singer or something. I don't know her. I don't know her. I don't know her either. Yeah, but she looks like she could be related to them. I mean, honestly, she looks like the Jonas sister that never existed. Did your daughter get confused again?
Well, they both, my son and my daughter, are like, well, that's weird that you would date someone that looks like the rest of your family.
Yeah.
You know? So that wasn't good, but there was a lot of laughter out of my kids. Good. Like, we all laughed a lot. I'm not even lying. It could be that I was two glasses of wine in when I watched this. You were prepared. You definitely need to go in with the right mindset if you're going to enjoy it. I mean, the kids only had one glass each, so that was good.
And speaking of the right mindset, it is a movie with a lot of singing. So could you tell me, Brooke, how long was it until they started singing? And be honest, did you secretly like any of their music? Well, it literally opens while they're singing on stage at a concert. So, but I thought that was just part of a scene, which my children were very upset because the concert only lasted one song.
Oh, they wanted a full showing. You can't do a whole movie, you guys, with a real life concert in it. Don't you say that to Taylor Swift. But then it was about, I think, 15 minutes in when I realized, oh, this is a musical. Yeah. So it's not just the Jonas Brothers singing. Oh, like a proper musical. It is a musical.
And the first musical song actually sold me because it's Joe Jonas' fantasy of what would happen if all three bros went out clubbing together. And there's a scene. This is my favorite line from this song. There's a scene where a couple people recognize them in a bar. And remember, this is all a musical. So listen. There's a shortness and you're a lot less hot. This is cringe, Brooke. I liked it.

Chapter 3: What are Brooke's initial thoughts on the movie's plot?
Yes.
He's like, oh, God. And the brothers are like, no wonder this got canceled so bad. And then there's also a shirtless selfie-taking pilot that's very funny as well. I won't go into the whole thing, but... This sounds like an amazing movie. It was great. I'm telling you. I know we're not to that question yet. I was going to ask. But they do lean a lot into Joe also dating, right?
Like being a playboy, right? Oh, yeah. Like a total man whore. Yeah. Was he the one that just got divorced? Yes. From Sophie Turner. Yeah, yeah, yeah. That's why he's the only one who was able to date someone, have a love interest in the movie. Because the other ones are with their wives. And the wives are in it. So, okay, I was going to ask you the cringiest moment.
Is that the same as the funniest Home Alone song or there's a separate cringy moment for you? No, there's a couple cringy things for me. I took notes. Where are my notes at here? Okay, one... Santa, who is the actor from Modern Family. Yep. Mitchell. Tyler Ferguson. Yep. Tyler Ferguson. Oh, the redheaded guy? Yep, yep. I love him. That's Santa. That's awesome.
He was trying to be, like, funny, campy. He just missed the mark. Oh no. He came, and I think it was maybe the writing, I'm not sure, but he creeped my kids out. Not like me, sure. Yeah, all their nightmares of Santa? Yeah, I think so. Okay. And then also, the other thing that was cringe to me is, so of course they always have to include some sort of love story in these movies.
Yeah.
Right? But did Joe Jonas' love interest have to also sing?
Yeah.
You know, they do a duet together, and they're like prancing around. No, it's fine.

Chapter 4: What did Brooke and her kids think of the movie's humor?
Okay, do you think this will become an annual Christmas movie your family watches together? That's what I wanted to ask. I'm so happy she's asking this. Do you know what's crazy is we already have plans to watch it again. No! Before Christmas, who are you going to show it to? Or you just want to watch it again?
Because I've been wanting to have a big holiday slumber party for my kids with their friends. And it would honestly... It's perfect for that. All of the kids would love it.
Girls and boys. How much swearing is in the movie, Brooke? I'm just kidding. You know those Joe bros.
Those Joe bros. Okay, that's cute. So you're going to watch it again this year. I'll watch it with my family too. I promise. It's fun. Out of 10 bros, what's your rating on the movie? That is a wrong rating because there are actually four Jonas Brothers, which is something I learned. Now that I'm an avid fan. Yeah, I looked up you're a jonatic, I think is the common term.
Oh, that's so good.
Now that I'm a jonatic, it's not just the three boys in the band. There's also a fourth little brother. Frankie. Yeah, Frankie. Oh, Ashton knows. Frankie makes an appearance in the movie. Oh, heck yeah. So I would give it all four bros. Wow. What? I did not see that coming. Two glasses of wine in the movie exceeds all expectations. Oh, my God. Watch it sober this time.
And then ask her again.
She's like, that's... Dude, I'm telling you, I'm going to learn the music. I'm going to sing along. I'm so happy. And I thought it was cute too, so I'm glad. But I hope this is not a choice we regret getting Brooke as a Jonas Brothers fan. I'm going to repost that picture of me and the bros and say that it was the best day of my life.
All right.
