Chapter 1: What kitchen trends are popular this summer?

0.031 - 17.185 Ciara Kelly

Hi, Newstalk's Ciara Kelly here. There is something about summer that makes you want to refresh your home. And for many of us, that starts with the kitchen. It's where the morning coffee happens, where family life gathers, where friends always seem to end up. And after years of wear and tear, it might be time to give it the attention it deserves.

Now we're going to take a look at what has been trending online this week and I'm joined by Olivia Fahey who's an entertainment journalist. Hello Olivia. Good morning. Lovely to see you. You too. As we look forward to the sunshine. Now you've been keeping an eye, tracking what's been trending online for us this week and you have been looking at this Eurovision drama over jury voting.

100.265 - 101.267 Ciara Kelly

What has been going on?

101.247 - 121.169 Olivia Fahey

Yes. So now you'd actually probably think that, especially with all the talk pre-Eurovision, that this might actually have something to do with Israel. But actually, no, it doesn't. This is to do with Romania and Moldova. And it's because the Moldovan jury didn't give Romania enough points. We're all familiar with the block voting and, you know, voting for your neighbour and things like that.

121.209 - 126.495 Olivia Fahey

Like Sweden will always give the points to another Scandinavian country and the same with others. And

Chapter 2: What controversy arose from the Eurovision jury voting?

432.977 - 433.678 Ciara Kelly

Tell me about this.

It wouldn't be me if I didn't come in with an adorable dog story. Yes, this is actually about a sniffer dog. It is actually his job to be looking for these things. He works for the United States Customs and Border Patrol Beagle Brigade. So Merle found 100 chicken and pork sandwiches in a passenger's luggage.

And essentially, of course, you're not really permitted to be bringing meat products into the country. And these sandwiches actually came from a 7-Eleven in Thailand. And the story kind of went viral over the week once they kind of announced and showed pictures of the adorable little Merle. If you Google it online, you'll be able to see them. And, you know,

It's basically been saying, according to the Washington Post, Merle earned what her canine handler likes to call the jackpot award. And it's multiple flavours of treats all at once. So she doesn't get to eat the stuff that she finds.

483.018 - 485.22 Ciara Kelly

No, she doesn't. She gets special treats off the back of it.

485.36 - 501.255 Olivia Fahey

She does, yes. But also went straight back to work and it was a 10 hour shift that she did. And she managed to find beef sausages from Kenya, pork possibly from Serbia, milk products and pork sausages and hamburgers from Japan as well. So like she was really like on the ball that day.

501.235 - 514.156 Ciara Kelly

We were talking about the new Star Wars film this week. Mixed reception it has received in movie theatres and people saying, look, is it time to just retire this format altogether? You're a massive fan, though. So you're welcoming this with open arms.

514.256 - 534.365 Olivia Fahey

I am. I'm literally wearing a Return of the Jedi T-shirt today. I have a Star Wars tattoo on my arm. I have lots of friends who have like full like sleeves of tattoos as well. Like Star Wars for me is my big franchise. And I have seen The Mandalorian and Grogu. I actually thought that it was great. There's people who are sort of saying it's like, ah, like it was just an elongated episode.

534.385 - 555.41 Olivia Fahey

And I'm kind of going, well, yeah, like The Mandalorian is an already established series. So it feeling in line with just a long episode makes sense because that's kind of what the fans would expect. This is not the film that's going to like break, reinvent the wheel and break the mold. This is supposed to be a continuation of the stories that we've been following for the past three seasons.
