What's up? Welcome to Canucks Talk on Sportsnet 650. I'm Jamie Dodd. My co-host is Thomas Drance. Drance covers the Canucks for The Athletic as well. Well, it's a little bittersweet. It's our last show of the year. Correct. The final Canucks talk. Yes. It's been an interesting year, I'd say. I mean, I think about, you know, at this point, this is the end of year five, which is hard for me in and of itself to wrap my head around. And I feel like in some ways the story of our show, because, I mean, consider it this way, man. When we did our first episode, I was in Chicago, and Travis Green was still the head coach of the Canucks. Uh-huh. Oliver Ekman Larson had played three games for the team. Jason Dickinson was just beginning to make a tough first impression. And the season was already off the rails with the club being, you know, rinsed, bag skated in Chicago, like just two, three games into the year.
And, you know, at that point you could start to see how fragile the this Pedersen-Quin Hughes era was. And our coverage came to reflect that. We spent years talking about the incoming rebuild. And then when it arrived this year, when I sort of consider it, man, it arrived in just about the most painful possible fashion. And it wasn't just the drama on the ice. It wasn't just the lackadaisical, disorganized performances we saw and sort of talked through. But it was just this sense of... An organization that had truly and totally lost their way, not purely because of results, but because of what they'd sort of come to stand for. And you could see it in their competitive integrity every night. You could see it to be around them.
You could feel it to be around them. And so it was a really challenging season to cover. And then, you know, I think not only was it a bad year in terms of that side of it, but obviously my dad passed away right before the season. Jim Robson. Yes. John Garrett. John Garrett, yeah. I mean, it was a heart-wrenching season for Canucks fans. And it wasn't a lot of fun to go through in a lot of ways. But I will say the highlight of my day every day is coming in and getting to do this show with you, my friend. Well, that's nice. And for our audience.
How has the Canucks off-season progressed according to Thomas Drance?
You know, it's not like Canucks fans haven't been through bad stuff before. And the point is, is that we do it together and we do it while arguing about stuff and we do it while talking through and obsessing over the minutia of this team's or this city's local NHL team. And it passes the time and it ends up being this sort of, you know, rhythm of our lives. And this is the moment where summer is here. We all take a deep breath. Yes. Uh-huh. But, you know, I'm looking forward to spending that time with you and spending that time with our audience again next season, regardless of whether it's good, whether it's fun, whether the days are sunny, whether they're rainy. Man, it was just such a privilege to do it this year.
We'll get into this more in the whiteboard, but I do feel like every year on the last show I come on and I'm like, wow, a lot happened this year. I know. But seriously, a lot happened this year. A lot happened this year. It's been like that every year. As you said, this is year five. We'll dig into a lot of it and we'll look forward as well. Before we go to the whiteboard, though, I do have to mention, as I said, we are live from beautiful Nat Bailey Stadium. And we're actually in a totally new spot for us. We are in the brand new Canadian Club down the right field line here in at Nat Bailey. If you've been to the Nat over the last little while or even been outside, you've seen the big construction project happening down right field.
Part of it is a new training facility for the team underneath, and on top, an incredibly beautiful new section that's part terrace that you can rent out, buy out for a company event or a big social event, something like that, and part just...
