James Jordan 0:02
Welcome to the Chalk Talk Gym podcast, where we explore insights into healthcare that help uncover new opportunities for growth and success. I'm your host, Jim Jordan. I have a bit of an unusual episode today. I invited Aaron Brooker, who is a physician disability insurance specialist with LeverageRx. Aaron educates us on disability insurance for physicians, the kind of exclusions that ambush residents, and the riders that quietly decide a policy's worth. It's a practical guide to protecting one's most valuable professional asset, overlooked generally until it's too late.

Who is Aaron Brooker and how did he become a physician disability‑insurance specialist?

James Jordan 0:43
So Aaron, tell me in the audience a little bit about yourself.
Aaron Brooker 0:46
My name's Aaron Brooker from Omaha. I was actually a middle school teacher for a number of years. When I was in college on the pro disc golf circuit, I said, how can I play more frisbee golf? And it was just becoming a teacher. So I did that for a number of years here in Omaha. Probably about seven years ago, I was talking to a friend. He said, hey, you'd be really good. There's a sales role open. And so I left education to sell disability insurance to physicians. And so I've been doing that for the last seven years at a pretty high level. Three years ago, I switched over to LeverageRx, and this is all I do. Physician disability insurance is my specialty, and we help 400 or 500 doctors secure their income checks per year.
James Jordan 1:24
So we were talking prior to starting recording my experience with this. Shout out to Jeff Burbank. We did a first startup, and I was his VP marketing when flying to Japan. And he says to me, do you have disability insurance? I said, of course, I have it through the company. He said, no, no, but if you want to be entrepreneurial, you anticipate that you want to move around or you maybe want to consult someday, this is something you want to get preferably before 30, definitely before 40. So many people are providers. We have nurse practitioners and we have physician assistants and residents. And what Jeff said to me, Which was striking to me. He said, you know, if I die, a check goes to my family and I move on with that insurance.

Why is protecting your income considered the most important asset for physicians?

James Jordan 2:03
If I'm sitting there drooling in the living room and the kids are walking around me as I grow up and they have to take care of me and I've also cut out their income stream, that's a problem. What's the motivation of most of the people that you talk to to get into this and at what age?
Aaron Brooker 2:16
I shifted several years ago from just focusing on sales numbers to going back to my roots of education. The more people that understand how these policies are, how they function, and what they actually protect is what really drives me. I have the advantage of talking to doctors that are told to buy disability insurance. It's obvious if an There's a big loss of income and we need to protect that for him and his family. What's not quite as obvious is a lot of my friends and colleagues who have kind of ping ponged their way up the corporate ladder. And now they are 40 years old. You're in middle management. You've got a good income, three kids, a nice home. There's a lot to protect and you don't realize that your employer benefits cover as much as you think they do.
Aaron Brooker 2:59
Or you're ready to go out on your own and have no benefits. And now you've got to take care of all of that just by yourself. And so the disability insurance policies, we all have term life insurance is easy and makes a lot of sense to purchase. Everybody insures their homes and their cars, but they don't realize that the income is actually the vehicle that drives all of those things to function.
James Jordan 3:22
I also don't think people know there's a dividend to these that reduce the cost over time if you get them early enough, right?
Aaron Brooker 3:29
Value of setting this up early is just so paramount because we've got so many stories about pre-existing conditions being excluded or not even being able to get coverage because there's some health items that have made it hard.
James Jordan 3:44
So why don't you start with some horror stories and then we'll go to the good stories.
Aaron Brooker 3:48
Last week, I'll just stay as anonymous as I can.
