Who is Gerry ‘The Monk’ Hutch’s son and why is his extradition newsworthy?
The son of Jerry the Munk Hutch has been extradited to Ireland and brought before the courts on a charge of facilitating a crime gang. Today I'm talking to Niall Donald about the case and you're listening to Crimeworld, a podcast from Crimeworld.com. Uh interesting timing and all this. We're t gonna talk about the extradition of Jerry the Munk Hutch's son, Jason, to Ireland. Um first of all, only the other day Tony Collier was in here. Yep. From ferry solicitors talking to me about the solicitor's strike, how it's affecting the district court. And sure enough, after his return from Spain, from Lanzarote, um, Jason Murphy was asked in court about whether he was represented by a solicitor. He said he wasn't because he wanted ferry solicitors and
He couldn't because they were on strike.
Yeah.
Um Ferry solicitors represented uh his his father. Yeah. His father during the Regency trial um Anyway, it's a bit of an aside, I suppose, to it, but nonetheless, going forward, his where is he going with these charges?
Well, I mean it's it's appeared in the district court an initial remand. He'd be back up matters of In a week. Yeah. And then of course you'll see where it is to be heard. Obviously, because of the level of the charge, it is it certainly w you would have to imagine it would be heard in the special criminal court, but that hasn't been right finalised at this stage. Obviously Daniel Kinhan was brought straight into the special criminal court, but that must be to do with the the particular warrant that he was on, for example. Uh this is a different case, but there's I can't because of the nature of the charge, which is under the what we describe as the anti gangland laws. Um I don't
It's the same charge, was it, that that Jonathan Dowdole utter ultimately pleaded guilty to after the murder charge was dropped, is that right?
Yeah. I mean this is a sort of we've had a a good few people on these charges. I'll read out the charge 'cause they can be slightly different. So obviously you you said Jason Murphy, but he is he was christened Jason Hutch.
What were the circumstances of Jason Hutch’s extradition from Lanzarote?
I actually just said Jason because you were aware that I said Jerry the Monk Hutch's son, Jason. Right, okay. Because I was aware that there was a a a thing with this with his name. He has a number of different
Names. 'Cause he was he was charged under the name Jason Jamie uh Murphy. Right. But I think his name was changed by Deed Pole a number of years ago. And obviously he was born uh christened Jason Hutch originally. Mm-hmm. So Jason Hutch is typically what he's he's been referred to though. The court name is different. And the charge he faces a single charge of facilitating the activities of a criminal organization between April to twelfth two thousand sixteen and the twenty ninth of September two thousand and twenty one at locations unknown while an Irish citizen residing in Lanzarote. So you know, obviously April Two thousand and sixteen would have been A number of months after the the Regency Hotel. Um Jason Hutch, I I think had left Ireland shortly after that, probably understandably.
And clearly this relates to you know, basically a slightly more than five year period.
Well, he may have left Ireland. We don't know where he was around that time of the Regency, of course, because his father, Jerry Hutch, has properties in Lanzarote for a long time. But it has been kind of based out there since about twenty twelve, I think.
Yeah, but the charge specifically says references he was living in Lanzarote during during the during that period. So it's it's Facilitation is is is a charge where there'd probably be a couple of bits to it. You have to the state would have to show there's a criminal organization. They'd have to show that that he is facilitating that, what what he is accused of. Um and yeah, these trials have we've we've become used to them now, haven't we, under these, these long charges?
So he was extradited from Lanzarote yesterday and the government jet was sent over to collect. I was surprised by that.
How does the anti‑gangland law define the charge of facilitating a criminal organisation?
Yeah.
I mean, I know the government jet was sent for Daniel Kinahan Kinahan in Dubai, um, but wasn't there
