Signs matched the name of a respected UK haulage firm. But handguns laid out on a piece of cardboard, locked and loaded, gave away its chilling use as an arms depot for the Kinnaghan gang at the height of their feud with the Hutch family. This wasn't a business unit. It was a war room. When Gardaí from the Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau and the Emergency Response Unit moved in on January 24, 2017, they found 15 military-grade weapons, including pistols, revolvers, a submachine gun and an AK-47-style assault rifle. They also uncovered silencers, tracking devices and more than 4,000 rounds of ammunition. More ammunition was found in a secret compartment in a van parked on the premises. Four firearms were laid out, fully loaded, appearing to be ready for immediate collection.
The raid was the culmination of a lengthy Garda operation involving covert bugging, surveillance and the use of confidential informants. It was a spectacular breakthrough. Gardie said at the time that the seizure in West Dublin disrupted an imminent attack and saved lives. Green Oak actually came about because of our investigations that we were carrying out surrounding Thomas Cavanagh and his associates in Ireland. And in particular, the identification of Declan Brady as being a person of significance. Declan Brady being the type of person who is an absolute necessity for any organised crime gang. So somebody who's an expert in logistics science, who lives a somewhat apparent normal lifestyle and doesn't engage in law enforcement and isn't written about in the newspapers. So somebody like him can facilitate the industry in itself taking place. So our covert investigations led us to the Green Oak case unit which was eventually searched in January of 2017 at a time when we were at a very high level of threat and we were of the belief that plans were afoot for an attack of some form to take place.
You know, what's ultimately important in Green Oak with all the firearms, there was four firearms when our emergency response unit entered by force. There was four firearms laid out on the ground, fully loaded, that appeared to be ready for collection. So I've no doubt an imminent attack was prevented on that date.
