Today I'm talking to Catherine Feagan, special correspondent with the Irish Independent, who covered the inquest. I'm Jenny Freel, and this is a Crimeworld Podcast from Crimeworld.com. Catherine, this week, as we're recording it's um the plowing championships, one of the highlights of the agricultural and rural world, uh, something like 250 to 270,000 people expected over three days. It was incredible. Um, and this year, it's the second year. In recent times, that it's been held in Screggin in County Offley, but it was held there back in I think 2018 for the couple of years as well.
So Scregan is a pretty familiar name to us now because of quite an infamous inquest at this stage back in July 2025. But um also this week we learned that that the results of that inquest um have led on to Lisa Flaherty, um, as our colleague in the Sunday Independent revealed this week, May Sheehan, that um she has indeed inherited five and a half million euro from her husband, who was a farmer called well, he wasn't a farmer actually, he wasn't really into farming, um, but uh he owned a farm, certainly, Joe Grogan. Um and So this has created a little bit of upset amongst some of Jo some of Joe's family, first cousins, um and uh their lawyer. Um, Mr. Tansy, Damian Tansey, who is um well known North Northwest based solicitor out there.
So, or barrister, isn't he? He's a senior counsel now. Um, he uh has came out this week to say that um he will be looking into this and um threaten the possibility of a high court case over the validity validity of that will. So this is a long and um quite dramatic tale, and uh thankfully for us, you at the inquest in twenty twenty five. Um so tell us who Joe Grogan was.
Well, Joe Grogan, uh, first of all, he's quite a private man. And I know a lot of his um final days, Mr. Groden's deceased, as you've said, and a lot of his pri his his final days have come into the spotlight with this story. Um But he was seventy five when he died, and he died in April twenty twenty three.

Uh and that followed a short illness with can he was he was diagnosed with stage four can cancer in the January and he died in April twenty twenty three. Um
stomach cancer or something, wasn't it? It was
a type blood cancer, isn't it? Oh blood cancer, okay, right. Yes. Um so it was he first became unwell in December twenty twenty two. And he was formerly diagnosed in January 2023. So he is or was the owner of this really large partial of land in Offaly Scregan is the location. It's where the ploughing is is being this week. It's a two hundred and twenty acre um patch of land, which is obvious obviously massive. And it's been valued at five point five million at at its height. Um And Mr Mr. Grogan himself, he's he's been described as a farmer. Yeah. A lot of uh news reports about this. But he was he wasn't really he wasn't really a farmer. He he was more into he was very passionate about tractors and machinery and he had a concrete business, um
He was very well known locally, obviously, because he owned this land and he had hosted the ploughing from twenty fourteen to twenty eighteen himself.

Um He had b aside from the ploughing though, he was he he was very a very kind person, very well liked in the community.
