But what a weekend of footy. Um I sat here last week and we had the gift of the Brisbane Hawthorne game and one of the best games we've seen um ever in a pre-limb final. Um that grand final was something else uh for for both sides. sides uh to have both sides play the way they did and the way that the game finished off. Um just a crazy end to a crazy year. Um was it defense or offense than one? It's funny how the the more offensive team won, but uh their pressure and defense was actually part of their highlight for the game.
So interesting way the game played out. I thought both coaches and both teams took so much off the opposition. Um And then it came down to just a a crazy last five minutes that I haven't seen anything like that um to happen in such a big game was incredible. But but we will get into it. Um we'll do a little recap of of the game and and more just my notes across the game. Um first quarter was probably as expected in terms of the way the games are played. Um there's a lot of pressure, it's pretty dirty, there's not many marks. Um both teams were playing and thriving reasonably well in it. Um there was a significant note by the umpires around the not fifteen call. Obviously that's probably more blended towards making sure Brisbane weren't able to just kind of just chip the ball around and and making sure they were all over that.
But In the end that cost uh Josh Tracy a shot on goal late in the quarter, which in in the I don't know, in hindsight of how the game played out at such an important moment. Um second quarter, just as as ca chaotic as the first, that the pressure, and this is probably the note across um Brisbane is The they had they had to play in a game that was that was more Freo. It was the the whole way the game played out until probably the last five minutes was more about the way Frio wanted the game to look and and what Brisbane did really well is they weren't able to play their game, but they were just able to stay in it. And where they did really well was around their tackling and pressure, which we haven't said that too many times about Brisbane, but um to half time scores a level, Caleb Sorong's had eight clearances for the game, driving the way
that Frio are playing. Um just incredible first half. Um to go in, scores level was was was awesome. You take the third quarter, and this is probably the point that as much as everyone's looking at Frio at the end of the game in terms of the the moments that cost them, I actually think the third quarter was the bit that cost them more. Um they had full dominance of that quarter.

They had territory dominance. They had twenty one inside fifties for for four goals, five If they kick straight of there, the game's over. Where Brisbane were able to stay in the game is they were able to keep coming back, and back end of that quarter, three goals in an eight-minute burst. Loman Allen and Cameron just got them back in the game close enough that that it was a real arm wrestle. Hayden Young, really important, and for talking Norm Smith, and I'm jumping all over the place here. But Norm Smith, I thought he was outstanding. He stood up in that third quarter when they needed. needed someone to stand up. If you think of four goals, five, the those last two goals are really, really um really important for the um where the game was at.
