Transcription

Chapter 1: Why are there no billion-dollar companies?

0.031 - 1.974 Brad Sugars

There are no billion dollar companies.

0

Chapter 2: How does hustle culture affect business success?

1.994 - 2.615 Sean Kelly

What do you mean by that?

0

2.855 - 5.499 Brad Sugars

McDonald's, it's not a billion dollar company.

0

Chapter 3: What are the four stages of business growth?

5.519 - 12.951 Brad Sugars

It's a two million dollar company done in tens of thousands of locations. Most businesses are small businesses done thousands of times.

0

12.971 - 13.311 Unknown

Got it.

0

13.431 - 18.579 Brad Sugars

And so if you look at it, you start thinking about what does it take? What is X times Y?

0

Chapter 4: How will AI impact routine work in businesses?

18.599 - 25.87 Brad Sugars

That's the formula for a billion. It's X times Y, not complex. It's this done this many times is a billion dollar business.

0

31.25 - 37.519 Sean Kelly

Okay, guys, we got a rich uncle here today. We got Brad Sugars here. Grew up in Australia, right?

0

37.539 - 46.632 Brad Sugars

Absolutely. Grew up in Brisbane, Australia, all over Australia, really. Moved here to the States 20-something years ago. Been here in Vegas 20 years this year.

0

46.912 - 47.913 Sean Kelly

That's a long time in Vegas.

0

48.494 - 49.876 Brad Sugars

Yeah. Must be a local now.

50.377 - 54.102 Sean Kelly

Yeah, I would consider you a local. A lot of people 20 years in Vegas, they couldn't make it, I think.

Chapter 5: Why do young people often chase the wrong jobs?

54.233 - 63.685 Brad Sugars

I think if you get past the first five years, I think you're pretty good. But that first year or two can really crush people in Vegas. I always warn them, like, if you hit this city, it'll hit back.

0

64.145 - 65.667 Sean Kelly

Yeah, I don't gamble, man.

0

65.887 - 77.567 Brad Sugars

No, I stopped gambling when I came here. I used to come here on guys' trips. The moment I moved to Vegas, I gave up any gaming doing that. I'm on the other side now. I have a game license, so it's like... Yeah, I'd rather be on the other side of that fence.

0

77.587 - 79.575 Sean Kelly

Gave up gambling. Gave up pretty much drinking.

0

Chapter 6: What is the billion-dollar formula (X × Y)?

79.595 - 83.189 Sean Kelly

Gave up gambling, went to gaming. Yeah. That's how you do it in Vegas, right?

0

83.209 - 83.611 Brad Sugars

Yeah.

0

Chapter 7: How does elimination lead to faster success?

83.631 - 85.438 Sean Kelly

All the money here is in gaming and hospitality.

0

85.621 - 101.861 Brad Sugars

Well, hospitality is a really good business here if you do it right. If you do it wrong, you're going to lose your shirt. But that's the same in any business. You do business right, you will make money. You do business wrong, see, the key to business is becoming a great business person, not being great at the job of the business.

0

101.922 - 120.544 Brad Sugars

Anyone can be great at a job, but you've then got to learn the sales, the marketing, how to run the business. I had to do that when I was a kid. I thought it was all about hustle and grind, and I bought into that. But hustle and grind is really the new stupid thing. Because what happens is you cover up all your mistakes. You work so hard, you don't notice where there's a problem in the business.

0

120.924 - 142.226 Brad Sugars

And by not noticing the problem, you don't fix it. So you just keep working harder and grind yourself into the ground. I think for the first two years when I ran Action Coach, I was on the road more than 200 days a year. Jeez. Hotel rooms, you know, all that stuff. And thank God I was single and young because I wouldn't have survived. But the problem was I wasn't really building a business.

0

142.246 - 144.889 Brad Sugars

I was building a job and I worked for an idiot. Right.

145.169 - 148.794 Sean Kelly

Yeah, because you have no time to reflect if you're traveling that much.

149.134 - 164.713 Brad Sugars

No, and I think you burn yourself at both ends, and you end up crushing it, and it's not a business. It's really just a crazy job. And so I had to learn the other way around of building something that ran without me, because if I'm there, it depends on me.

165.834 - 169.358 Sean Kelly

Do you think there's diminishing returns when it comes to working excessive hours?

169.81 - 189.683 Brad Sugars

Definitely. If you work more and more and more, it decreases the amount because you've got to have fresh ideas. But here's the challenge with that. In business, when you first start out, you've got to do the number of hours because you are the business. To get to your first million, you got to work dang hard and be great at what your business does because your first million is really you.
