My reaction is I remember back in 2019 arguing about Monte Morris is the real assist to turnover leader, not Tyus Jones. It's Monte Morris. But that was like one lifetime ago. My initial thought on this, I mean, it's twofold. First, I think that the Nuggets were hopeful that it was going to be someone else. I think the Nuggets went into this deadline hoping for Chris Middleton, Kyle Anderson, or one of those types of players.
How does Tyus Jones fit into the Nuggets' roster after recent trades?
I think they were looking probably primarily more as a forward defensive player who has some offense to him, mainly just a vet. And when the market sort of passed them by, I think they were aggressive looking for those guys. Those guys weren't interested. I think when that happened, they still wanted to put a 15th player on the roster. I think it was very important to them to say, even if this gives us 0.01% better odds at the title, we will do it. And this represents that very marginal improvement to the Nuggets' title odds. I think it's representative of how weak the buyout market was this year. You know, in years past, it seemed like there were some real difference makers out there this year. Not so much.
I feel like, you know, Middleton, obviously if he would have been out there, that's a difference maker. I think Kyle Anderson could be a difference maker for Minnesota down the stretch in the playoffs for sure. But outside of that, I don't know if there were a lot of options, and I'm with you. I expected the Nuggets to look for a forward, somebody with some more size and defense and versatility, and they settle on a point guard. And I kind of think that's what it is. It's a settle. in a way because there wasn't another option out there at a preferred position. And so they go Tyus Jones, who was recently with Dallas cut a few days ago, 29 years old, been in the league forever, six foot. I feel like most people know the rundown with Tyus Jones, low mistake, pick and roll point guard who can be a floor general and run a team.
I was looking at his stats for this season, man. Not impressive. His stats might not be a great signal from this year. I think you can go with last year's stats to get as much of a signal, but they're not that different. Last year, he played 81 games for the suns, 27 minutes per game started 58 games. So played a lot of minutes last year, average 10.2 points, 5.3 assists per game, 45% shooting from the floor, 41 and a half percent from three. So no, he's gives you a little bit of everything on offense. I don't think he's going to be a game breaker by any means, but a pick and roll point guard who can set up your offense, get you into stuff. And a guy that could be playing off the bench. Do you think he's going to play a lot?
So, no. Here's what I think. There's only 21 games left to go. And Denver's playoff rotation, I think, is largely set. Although it's possible he'll play into the playoffs. We'll talk about that, I'm sure, here in a little bit. But they have 21 games to go. And they really don't have a lot of depth at point guard. Pickett had been dealing with an injury. He came in this last game, played limited minutes. I think of the 21 games, it is likely Jamal Murray will miss, maybe two, you know, maybe three. I mean, you don't know, but I think they look at that and say health is a priority. But is it possible to rest Jamal and not lose? And Tyus Jones, that's really, to me, the only margin he makes up for the Nuggets is if Murray was out a game, you're not going to feel like you're going to lose solely because you don't have enough point guards.
You have Pickett, you have Tyus Jones, you can run no point guard lineups like they do with the bench. And now you at least have the hope that you can beat some of these lesser teams and pick a spot for Jamal to rest.
