Chapter 1: What are Grandma Gail's Memorial Day plans?
Welcome back to another episode of Excuse My Grandma. It's Kim and my co-host, Grandma Gail. Grandma, it's been a while since we podcasted.
Well, it's been a while since we've been in this studio. We did a podcast a week ago down at Spotify. I don't know why.
It feels like a really long time ago.
Because you miss me. It's so sweet of you to say. Well, I haven't seen you in a week. Right. That's a long time for us. For us, yeah. For us, it's a long time.
Have I changed?
I cut my hair. You didn't even notice.
No, I kind of did. I feel like you look different.
Oh, that was it.
It looks nice. Same person?

Chapter 2: What should I wear to a graduation event?
Okay.
But now it's good. Yeah. Good for three weeks.
Okay, great. I'm so happy for you.
I know.

And yeah, I want to hear what's up with you. And then today on the episode, we're going to get into everyone's questions that they wrote in, especially about Memorial Day, summer hosting, summer travel.
I know, it's wild. And we're going to go through some articles of the week. We're going to talk about what we're watching on TV, all the good things. All right, Kim, start it. Memorial Day plans. Yes.
Well, I'm going to a Brown graduation. So that's my I'm excited. Yeah, I'm excited. It seems like yesterday that she just started. But I think Rhode Island's going to be a little chilly this weekend. So I was just looking through my vast closet and deciding what sweaters and what pants to take. And I'll take, I guess, a jacket of some sort because it's only supposed to be in the low 60s.
And most of it is outdoors.

Chapter 3: How long should guests stay during summer visits?
Right. Well, I'm going to L.A. this weekend. Oh, fun. Kind of last minute. Oh, for the weekend? For the weekend. Good. My boyfriend has off on Monday, so I thought it was, like, a good time because we can do more activities and stuff. Okay. I don't know. I mean, it's like easy enough, I guess.
Well, it's really not easy.
It's really not easy. The flight's long. Right, the flight is long. And there's a time difference. Once I'm there, it's fine. Okay. So we made some reservations and stuff, but it's supposed to be like really good weather.
Oh, I think, yeah, California is really nice now.
Yeah. What does like a perfect Memorial Day look like to you? Like the day of?
Just a barbecue, just a barbecue. You know, you put your flags out or you go in town and you watch the parade. Even in East Hampton, when I'm out there, they have the fire engines come out and the police cars come out and they go down Main Street and the kids are all waving the flags. It's it's.
First of all, it's an iconic weekend and it's the beginning of summer and you are paying respect to our heroes of the past. So I think it's really something that we should celebrate.
If you go to a Memorial Day barbecue, what's the side dish that you're bringing? I go. Or that you're putting out.
I think probably, well, I like hot dogs and hamburgers. So it would either be baked beans, which I love. I've never seen you eat that ever. I love baked beans. I used to eat it all the time. Well, I haven't made a barbecue in a long time. Or coleslaw or potato salad. Yeah, I feel like that's more on brand.

Chapter 4: What etiquette rules should I follow for summer BBQs?
But I don't think I've seen you eat that.
Well, I haven't had a barbecue at my house in a long time.
I guess. But I've definitely seen you eating.
Well, coleslaw. I love coleslaw.
It's probably not that hard to make, though. I've seen that on TikTok.
I'm sure nothing is hard to make if you concentrate, but we're not very good at cutting. Yeah. We had a problem cutting lettuce for a Waldorf salad.
True. Yeah. If anyone missed that video, we did a collab with Healthy Girl Kitchen, Danielle Brown, who just came out with a cookbook and we made a healthy version of a Waldorf salad. We could just, I don't know. It was cutting the grapes and cutting all those little things. It's not that hard. I just, I'm not doing it like quick speed.
Well, you're not supposed to. Your finger will get cut off.
I guess. Okay, let's answer some of those listener questions I was talking about, about Memorial Day weekend. Okay. We got a lot in, so we're going to answer the rest on our Instagram stories. So look out for those if you're listening. Okay. How long should parents stay while visiting their kids from out of town?

Chapter 5: What are the best side dishes for a Memorial Day barbecue?
I feel like more than four nights starts to feel like a lot.
It depends on your room. And your relationship. Right. If you have a a place where they have their own room and they're not sleeping in a pullout sofa somewhere, then I think it doesn't really matter. But it depends on the relationship of all the characters. Yeah. I'm always careful. You don't want to overstay.
My grandfather used to keep his hat on because he was never sure somebody would tell him he should leave.
That's funny. Just ready to go.
He was always ready to go.
I feel like in all the old movies, they'd have like hat stands.
Oh, yeah. I don't know. I never see that anymore. Because men never went out in public without a hat. And women, too, as well, wore hats because it was like the thing with gloves. Is it like modesty or what was it? I don't know. No, I think it was just a traditional mode of dressing. People just wore hats and they felt.
When you were like little or even when you were.
No, when I was little, I think my grandparents wore a hat and my mother, they all wore little hats. We never went to a synagogue without wearing covering our head. Yeah, that makes sense. But now, you know, you don't. Or you wear a little bit of a lace thing in the back of your hair just to be modest.

Chapter 6: How should I prepare for summer hosting?
Chapter 7: What are some summer travel destinations from New York?
You wore a white dress.
As family members, do you dress up?
Not really. The only time we did get dressed for your graduation was the Saturday night. You had that fun party with the other girls in that space. And we did dress up. We wore a little dressier pair of pants and a sweater.
It was dressy for Ithaca.
Yeah, well, Ithaca, really, anything could be dressy for Ithaca.
So you're going to, and then what do you do when you're there? Like dinners?
Well, I think the first night we're having pizza party, just her small group of friends. No, she said it's going to be hundreds of people. Well, I don't know who's going then. All I know is we're going for a pizza party. I'm excited.
I don't remember who was that. Something she said it's a giant party with hundreds of people. Okay. Well, I think that's Saturday night.
But I'm not sure. Saturday night, I think, is a big party with, you know, like the whole senior class or a bunch of the girls that she's friendly with. And during the day, there's a smaller graduation, which you had the same thing. You know, you had a smaller graduation. Like for your major. Exactly. And then you end up with a big graduation, which they're having on Sunday.

Chapter 8: How can I make my summer parties memorable?
Yeah, I feel like my travel bags don't have zipper or not my like my big my tote bags. Like they don't have zippers. Well, if I stole one from you, but otherwise.
I think that it makes sense to have a zipper, especially if you're going on public transportation. Yeah. I would almost invest in an inexpensive one if you're going away for the summer. Because people pickpocket, unfortunately, in the big cities, and it's no different than any other place. And it's better to be safe. And then never carry your passport – if you're in a hotel –
Put your or any kind of accommodation. See if you have a lockbox or to keep your passport and then have a photocopy of the actual passport in your wallet.
Don't bring it around with you. I wouldn't. I wouldn't. I thought you do, because especially if you go shopping and stuff, you show your passport.
Well, if you're shopping, I don't think most people who are traveling are necessarily spending the whole day shopping. It's probably very expensive to do that. I think if you know you're going on a shopping day, but I think if you take a photocopy, most of them with your number will accept that.
Can't you get your passport, like a digital ID on your phone? I haven't fully looked into this, but I thought that was a thing now.
I don't really know. I know you have to have your license with a specific security code on it, which I have in Florida. I know New York did. Yeah, and your license, you have to have like a little, either a star or a flag or something.
I think real ID.
Yeah, I think that, but I don't think any of that takes the place of a passport. You still have to show a passport.
