Cory Hillibeau here and I'm here with Carl. Carl, tell us where you're from and what you farm.
North Central Iowa, farmer-feeder. We're growing some small grains, corn, and soybeans, and cattle, and we've kind of really wrapped up our main core of the operation. That was kids, so we got them out of the house.
That's the most important one, right? Yep. So you do not work for Performance Livestock, I know that's correct?
No, no, but I have acquired some free merch over time, yes.
Had to clarify that. How long have you used Performance Livestock?
I was customer number 10, or I am, so I believe that would put me somewhere in the range of probably 2015.
2015, so that's pretty early in the days.
2016.
How has your experience been?
Incredible. Literally from day one, we went from a point of technology adaptation to dependence and core dependency on it.
Explain how you started using it, what you used it for, and if that's changed at all over these last 16 years.
Well, you know, I started it from just paper elimination, right? I was a custom feeding business, several pens of cattle, spending something in the neighborhood of 30 to 60 minutes a week paper trail. But, of course, that wasn't done in a disciplined fashion, and frequently that would end up being every three weeks or six weeks and a half a day.
Yeah.
And with that cost of not billing out customers came a substantial penalty.
Right. So immediately beginning, you saw that benefit. You weren't doing that paper trail. Is it still the same old business as usual or have you adapted to use it any other way?
Well, certainly we learn on it all the time, and every time somebody asks about it, we learn more as we tell what we can do with it. And, of course, one of the best benefits that we talk about in the neighborhood is that once you know an individual's feed truck and once you know their pen names, anybody from our operation can go help a neighbor feed or vice versa. So we call that relief feeding. It's been invaluable for anybody that's got to travel or anything else. Any challenge that goes about, it's easy within our operation that anybody can jump in and feed, and there's trackability if there's misloading or misdrops.
It must be pretty user-forward. The user interface must be very easy if you can just hop in and do someone else's, right?
Oh, certainly. Certainly easy. And not just that, but there's remote access. My kids were in high school and had a one-to-one initiative, so everybody had a device in front of them, and they'd literally be watching me feeding, and I'd get a text that said, Dad, you just fed the wrong order of loads. What are you doing? Or I'd say something like, hey, I've got to bump rations. Can you help me? And they'd do it remotely for me. So that and early on and so the support staff was even great before there was an incredible support staff.
That's pretty funny. So do you have third parties connected like your vets and nutritionists and that kind of stuff too?
Who is Carl and what type of farm and custom feeding operation does he run?
Certainly, certainly, yeah. And we really appreciate the Elanco benchmark and getting all that data that normally we used to be able to only get at a conference once a year. And we can pull that benchmark. So then we have customers that are retained ownership in quite a circle and they can look in and see how their cattle are doing at any time they want.
