Voice of the Hawkeyes, Gary Dauphin. Hey, good evening everybody! Terrific crowd on uh on a uh Wednesday night here in Iowa City, and why not? It is Cyhawk Week in Johnson County and around the state and around the Midwest. We're Saturday night under uh Muskow's gleaming lights. Uh Iowa and Iowa State will confront each other for the 73rd time in their histories. And for the last 14 years, uh Iowa's proud corn farmers, the Iowa Corn Growers of Association and the Iowa Corn Promotion Board have uh beaten the drum loudly in promoting our two universities, its athletics. And it's uh and their academics through the Iowa Corn Cy Hawk series. Both the Hawks and the Cyclones won their season openers last Saturday.
Iowa shut down northern Illinois forty to nothing over at Kinnock. The Cyclones uh disposed of Southeast Missouri State thirty-eight to ten over at uh Jack Trice and Ames. The Hawkeyes, with eleven first time starters, seven on defense, pitched the shutout, holding Northern Illinois to just 120 yards of total offense, seven first downs, and forced two uh two turnovers. Uh offensively fourth year running back Kamari Moulton. What a day. Rush for career high, one hundred and eighty-three yards and two touchdowns. Uh first year Hawkeye. Okay. Caught seven passes for eighty four yards and a touchdown. Both Iowa quarterbacks uh had their moments. Starter Hank Brown uh manufactured uh touchdowns on the Hawkeye's first three possessions, and Jeremy Heklinski.
guided the Hawkeyes to a touchdown and a hundred and fifty four yards of offense across five series or five possessions. So we'll see how Kirk Ferriss and Tim Lester's game plan plays out i in a couple days against uh obviously uh uh the competition will ratch up defensively in a number of ways, but uh you you gotta believe that Hank Brown uh uh will will play a significant minute And uh Heklinski uh did no wrong. I mean, uh, neither turned the ball over. We were talking about that last week. Turn around, handed off to Kamari Moulton or find those tight ends, and maybe the deepest receiving core that the Hawks have had in a number of years. Over in Ames, the Cyclones got a pair of touchdown passes and two running scores from quarterback Jalen Rayner, the senior transfer from Arkansas State.
eight where he enjoyed uh great success there. He threw for 184 yards and ran for 32. Running back Aiden Flora ran for 45 yards and a score. Defensive end Isaac Terrell had three of the Cyclone's six sacks and was named Big Twelve Defensive Player of the Week. And linebackers Sullivan Schlimgen and Carson Willlich had 16 tackles between them. As usual, the Cyclones have very active linebackers, much like Iowa. So Saturday's game brings uh the uh 30th consecutive sellout to Kennick Stadium. Uh it'll be the 28th night game in the history of Kennick. The Hawks are 20 and 7 uh in those uh previous 27. Iowa has 39 native Iowans on its roster, including five starters. The Cyclones have 25 homegrown talents, and that's important because bragging rights are on the line for another year, especially with the Iowa natives, the native sons of the Great Hawkeye State.
Now, Iowa State has won the last two meetings thanks to uh kicker uh Kyle Conrad's last-second field goal.
