What led to Leicester City's remarkable 2015 Great Escape?
Tekijöiden kauppa.
How did hopes for the 2015/16 season begin to build?
You're listening to the Football Daily Podcast with Kelly Cates.
Over the next two episodes of the Football Daily, we're looking at a remarkable decade at Leicester City. Having narrowly escaped relegation, the 5,000-to-1 outsiders stunned the sporting world by winning the Premier League.
What role did Claudio Ranieri play in Leicester City's success?
A decade on, the club is in turmoil. Just a week ago, relegation to League One was confirmed. We'll bring you the story of that season and the decade since. It's a story of Claudio Ranieri and N'Golo Kante, but also of King Richard III and Andrea Bocelli, of pizzas, of presenters in pants and of Jamie Vardy having a party.
How did signing N'Golo Kanté impact Leicester City's performance?
But since then, an FA Cup win, a helicopter crash, three relegations and financial turmoil. This is the story of one of the greatest sporting tales of all time and how it all fell apart.
What was Jamie Vardy's contribution during the title-winning season?
5,000 to 1 is the odds the bookmakers offered on Leicester City to win the league at the start of the 2015-16 season. We'll be joined by a Leicester fan. who won big. We'll also be joined by the man who's Alex Ferguson called the most influential man in the Premier League. That's former head of scouting and assistant coach Steve Walsh. And not one, not two, but three members of that history-making team will be with us throughout the evening. We'll speak about everything that came afterwards, of course, as well. Champions League football, an FA Cup win, three relegations, and of course, the sad death of the former chairman, Vichai. We'll also discuss the current state of affairs at the club with Jordan Halford from the Big Strong Leicester Boys podcast after confirmation that the club will play in League One next season.
Joining us at the beginning of this programme to go through it all, a former Leicester City captain who played every minute of every Premier League match this season and was the first of them to get his hands on the Premier League trophy. Wes Morgan, what a moment, Wes, to get your hands on that trophy and lift it at the end of the season.
Hi, how are you doing? Yeah, one of the biggest moments of my career. You're kind of half not thinking it's going to be possible. And then the closer you get to the end of the season, the more it becomes possible. And then when it was confirmed and the impossible was reality, best feeling ever. You know, that night at Vardy's house, and I'm sure we'll touch on it, Oh, we will. When it's all confirmed and it was just an explosion of emotions and everyone going hysterical, you know, as a fan of football, to achieve that and get to that point, which is the ultimate prize, in my opinion, to achieve that is something I never thought was possible.
Also with us, former Leicester Winget and Premier League winner Mark Albrighton is here as well. Mark, just the most incredible memories of that season. And it's been an extraordinary story for Leicester over the last 10 years. But when you go back to that title winning season, how often do you think about it?
Yeah, it's obviously something that 10 years on, it gets brought up daily. So I think that sort of goes to show how big of an achievement it actually was. I know I don't. I don't think any of the boys would get tired of talking about it.
What memorable moments occurred during Leicester City's title celebrations?
It was just so much that happened that season and so much to reminisce on that it's just great story after great story.
Talking of which, BBC Sports Midlands football reporter Nick Masheter is with us as well. Nick, even one of these stories at any one football club would be an incredible one to cover, would be an extraordinary period to cover. Leicester have had a whole host of them.
Yeah, it's been quite the decade, hasn't it, really? Having watched them, there's no reflective glory, but we're just holding on to the coattails of a little bit of greatness, aren't we, Wes? But to see what they did was remarkable at the time.
How did the betting odds reflect Leicester City's unexpected success?
But when you just start to sit back and look at it and really appreciate that it's probably never going to be repeated again either.
