The Trump administration is ending temporary protected status for thousands of Somalis in the United States.
They're told to leave the country by March 17th. Somalians became eligible for temporary protected status in 1991 due to the civil war and humanitarian crisis there. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem tells Fox in a statement, temporary means temporary. Country conditions in Somalia have been proved to the point that it no longer meets the law's requirement for temporary protected status. U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services sources tell Fox there are 2,471 Somali nationals currently in the U.S. under TPS, with 1,383 more in the country with pending applications. Around 600 of the protectees live in Minnesota. Allegations of federal funding fraud involving members of the Somali community there go back to 2021.
