Federal officials are investigating New York City council member Farrah Lewis, her sister Debbie Lewis, and Edu Hermelin, the husband of New York State Assembly member Rodney Bichotte Hermelin. The Associated Press reports that the investigation centers on possible kickbacks tied to more than a dozen city contracts worth $200 million that came about after an influx of migrants in 2022. Debbie Lewis works for Governor Kathy Hochul as Assistant Secretary for Intergovernmental Affairs. and was placed on leave following the federal inquiry. Louisiana state senators advance a bill allowing lawmakers to remove sitting judges they find to be incompetent.
The Senate bill cites high-profile state murder cases and court decisions to not hold violent offenders as a reason for lawmakers being able to remove judges. During the state Senate debate this week, Republican Jay Morris, who wrote the bill, said it can save lives.
Because people have died because of malfeasance in office.
Democrat Royce DuPlessis countered, saying the bill gives state lawmakers license to negate the will of local voters.
