Chapter 2: What weather events are affecting the Carolinas and Virginia?
That was over in the mountains, some elevation there. Here in Greenville, they're averaging about 8.5 inches, but there was a snow report of 15 inches, which would, in theory, make it the snowiest day they've seen on record. going all the way back to 1896. That's where the previous record stands at around 13 inches. But yesterday, the snow came on fast and furious.
We had snowfall rates close to an inch, an inch and a half per hour, and it was a very light, fluffy, powdery snow that can only happen when you have very cold air in place, something that is somewhat rare for the South and the Southeast.
This weather causing major disruptions to airline travel. The partial government shutdown now in its second day with DHS funding taking center stage in the dispute. It's expected to continue as Democratic leaders say they won't help pass a funding bill.
If House Democrats would vote yes, the government could reopen Monday night. But now it's going to take until at least Tuesday. Republicans may need to pass the bill on their own. Chris Murphy of Connecticut is the top Democrat on the panel, which funds ICE. The bill would only fund DHS for two weeks, and Republicans oppose Democratic demands for ICE agents to remove masks and carry IDs.
Now, Johnson believes the House can align with the Senate on Tuesday. That would end the partial shutdown. But some House Republicans could oppose the deal. They believe Democrats are trying to keep ICE from doing its job.
