The company confirming the model that was hacked was hacked by guessing passwords and or using archives of publicly listed passwords. They say a bug in the testing environment made internet access available and then once realized the security test was immediately stopped. Google also says it didn't consider the hacks to warrant public disclosure at the time because its model didn't cause harm to the hacked companies. In a statement, Google says quote, This event highlights the importance of training powerful AI models to act responsibly.
In this case, the model acted appropriately.
The disclosure comes after Open AI, Anthropic, and Meta reported similar incidents.

Federal prosecutors say thirty four year old Sharifa Nicole Henderson sent a series of violent threats to the family of seventeen year old Austin Metcalfe, who was fatally stabbed at a Texas high school track meet last year. The alleged messages came around the end of Carmelo Anthony's murder trial and included threats to kill, stalk, and strangle family members. Henderson was arrested in Kansas City, Missouri and indicted on three counts of Interstate threatening communications. Metcalf's father says his family has received more than one hundred threats since Anthony's trial ended. Henderson faces up to five years in federal prison on each count if convicted.
