A lot of the young boys and young men I've worked with, they don't see that hope for the future. They feel like the bad guys culturally, there's also a little bit of a feeling like This isn't our moment, so I'm not sure where we fit culturally in this moment. And they also recognize I don't want my dad's life or the lives of the men around them. And so there is kind of a combination of factors that is drawing hope from them. And so we're seeing all these behavioral issues and depression and anxiety, but I think all of it is derivative. Of some degree of hopelessness and loneliness that they're suffering. They're spending a ton of time alone that really concerns me.

I'm Debbie Rieber and welcome to Tilled Parenting, a podcast featuring interviews and conversations aimed at inspiring, informing, and supporting parents raising differently wired kids. A few months ago, I had my friend and colleague Kathy Adams on the show to talk about her book, Restoring Our Girls and Raising Daughters to be Emotionally Healthy in a Complicated World. And I knew then that I wanted to have a similar conversation for a future episode, but this time Focusing on boys, specifically about why many teen boys are struggling right now and what we as parents can do to support them. I also knew exactly who I wanted to bring on the show to talk about this: Dr. John Duffy, a clinical psychologist who has spent the last 25 years working with adolescents, young adults, and families.

John's been on the show before to talk about his book, Parenting the New Teen. In the age of anxiety. But this time, we're going to get into the concepts he explores in his new book, Rescuing Our Sons: Eight Solutions to Our Crisis of Disaffected Teen Boys. Through his private practice, his best-selling books, and media appearances on places like CNN, NPR, and The Today Show, John has helped thousands of parents navigate the complex world of raising teens in today's world, and he has really got a pull. On the complex inner lives of teen boys. So, in this conversation, we talk about the unique mental health challenges boys are facing today, from increased isolation and anxiety to the messages they're getting from society that are leading to self-doubt and emotional struggles.
Debbie Reber 2:45
We also discussed how the pandemic intensified these issues and why paying attention to the media they're consuming is key to connecting with them. John also shared how neurodivergent boys may experience these challenges differently and shared practical strategies for fostering emotional resilience and self-worth. So if you are raising a boy and you're worried about their emotional well-being or you feel unsure about how to support them in this rapidly changing world, this is a powerful listen. I also encourage you to share this episode widely in the communities you're in. in or with other parents of teen boys. Thank you so much. And now here is my conversation with Dr. John Duffy. Hey John, welcome back to the podcast.

It is so great. I've been looking forward to this. I think I reached out to you when I had Kathy Adams on the show to talk about her book, Restoring Our Girls. And I knew about your book, Rescuing Our Sons. I'm like, I gotta bring John on to talk about this as well. They're both such important conversations. So I want to get into as much as we can today. But before we do that, tell us a little bit about. yourself through the lens of this specific conversation we're gonna have today, why you really do the work you do, but specifically wanted to share what your book is about.
Dr. John Duffy 4:10
