I'm Debbie Reber, and you are listening to Full Tilled Parenting. Today we're diving into the world of empaths and highly sensitive children. What it means to be one, what makes it complicated, and why it's also such a gift. My guest is Dr. Judith Orloff, a psychiatrist and empath, and a New York Times bestselling author whose books include The Empath's Survival Guide and her most recent The Genius of Empathy. And she actually has a beautiful Beautiful new children's book out called The Highly Sensitive Rabbit, which she created to help kids understand and embrace their sensitivity. Dr. Orlov serves on the UCLA psychiatric clinical faculty, has spoken at places like Google, TED X, and the American Psychiatric Association, and her work has been featured everywhere from the New York Times, NO, the Oprah magazine to Scientific American.
So this is such a fascinating conversation. I hear from so many folks in the community that they are empaths, that their children are highly sensitive and empathic. So, in this conversation, Judith is going to talk about the science behind sensitivity and empathy, how to recognize a highly sensitive child, and why self care and co regulation are so critical for both parents and kids. Judith will also touch upon bullying, sensory overload, and the strategy. strategies that empaths can use not just to survive but to thrive. And don't forget you can now watch this episode on the Full Till Parenting YouTube channel. So please go over there and subscribe. We're trying to build up our audience so the YouTube algorithm promotes important conversations like these with the parents who need them.
So here is my conversation on empaths and highly sensitive children with Dr. Judith Orloff. Hey Doctor Orloff, welcome to the show. Thank you, I'm happy to be here. I am really honored to have you here.
What is the purpose of this episode and who is the guest?
I think this is gonna be such an interesting conversation. I've read your formal bio, but you have such a presence in this space and what we're gonna be talking about today. Would you take a few minutes to talk about your personal why for the work that you do in the world?
Well, I'm a psychiatrist at UCLA and I supervise psych residence and I'm also in private practice and I'm an impact. And so I combine my traditional psychiatric skills with being an empath and helping others who are empaths h or highly sensitive people come into their power and learn how to set boundaries, practice self-care. and know when their energy is being drained so they can take alone time. So I give a lot of techniques on helping highly sensitive and empathic people to enjoy their gifts and come into their own gifts. And the reason I got into this was because I was A very highly sensitive child. I would be sensitive to noise, sight, smells, sounds, talking, crowds and I didn't know what was going on.
And my parents would say, Oh, you're overly sensitive. It feels terrible when you're a little girl and you're being told you're overly something because it's how you are. And it's not overly anything, it's just who I am. But I had no support then. And so part of my healing path has been coming into my own power as an empath and highly sensitive person and just having so much fun with it and of course incorporating it with science and working with patients. So That's been my healing path. And I want to share it with others. That's why I I feel really strongly about the highly sensitive rabbit because I want the children to know about this so they didn't have to struggle like I did, and like so many of us do when we're alone and we have these abilities and people say derogatory things or shame us.
Or pulling us.
