I'm Debbie Reber, and this is Full Tilt Parenting. You may recall that last fall, my friend and colleague Penny Williams, she's a parenting coach for neurodivergent families, the author of four books on ADHD, including Boy Without Instructions, and the host of the Beautifully Complex podcast. She and I did a two-part series on what it really looks like to support our neurodivergent young adults as they moved toward living self-determined lives. So part one was here on Full Tilt Parenting, and part two was on Penny's show, Beautifully Complex. complex. We left a lot of topics on the table. So we're back with more parts three and four, in fact. So this episode on full-tailed parenting is part three, and we're going to be focusing on the practical and emotional realities of this stage.
Debbie Reber 1:14
So things like financial literacy, accommodations, decision making, and Penny and I will share personal stories, strategies that have helped and some honest reflections on what this particular phase asks of us. And then you can listen to part four over on Beautifully Complex this Thursday. And in that episode, we'll be talking about things like consent and communication, exploring thinking about future and goals, and how we approach conversations about difficult topics like risky behavior, substance use, and more. So this is part three with Penny Williams. And then don't forget to tune into part four on Thursday. And as always, if you want to watch this conversation, head over to the Full Tilt Parenting YouTube channel.

And while you're there, subscribe. Okay, here's the episode. Hey there, Penny. Welcome back to my podcast. Hey,
Penny Williams 2:05
Demi. Always good to see you.
Debbie Reber 2:08
Same. This is an episode that we are continuing. We started it last fall, I believe, and we thought it was going to be it. We were going to do a two-parter on launching young adults. And then we only got halfway, if that, through our outline for those two episodes. And so now we are...

How do the hosts introduce the practical topics they’ll cover (money, accommodations, decision‑making)?

Debbie Reber 2:26
following up and doing the part two of the two-parter. So really parts three and four. So if that's not confusing enough, I'm just going to say this for listeners. So Penny and I recorded two episodes in the fall. The first part was on Tilt Parenting. The second part followed two days later on Penny's podcast, Beautifully Complex. And we're doing the same thing again. So as you're listening to this today, this is part three. And two days later, you can go to the Beautifully Complex podcast and hear the part four. And I guess it's to be determined if there will be additional episodes after this. We'll see what we can get through in these. That was a long-winded welcome. Anything you want to share or say before we dive in?
Penny Williams 3:10
Yeah, I think this conversation about parenting young adults who are neurodivergent maybe never ends. That's what came up as you were talking about it. Like maybe this conversation never quite ends, but that's growth, right? We're on a journey.
Debbie Reber 3:26
Sure. That is growth. We are on a journey a thousand percent. And I'm sure since we recorded this, our lives have changed and our kids have changed and the things that we are navigating have changed. So yeah, we probably could continue doing installments of this, but let's see what we can get through today. So yeah, What we're going to do today is talk a little bit about some kind of logistical things that we might be navigating that we really didn't touch upon in the first two installments of this and get a little more granular because I think parents are feeling really curious about, well, how did you handle this? And we may not hit everything that you guys listening are curious about. And of course, you can send us emails if you have more specific questions that we can
