Shortly we'll be making a journey to the late nineteenth century. to experience entertainment before the advent of films. Many years before the birth of movies. Audiences were being dazzled by the stories and images. of devices called magic lanterns. The earliest of these projectors probably date back to the sixteen hundreds and The power and complexity of the magic lantern increased over the years. By the end of the eighteen hundreds, it's estimated that there were as many as thirty to sixty thousand lantern showmen travelling the United States alone.
Putting on upwards of a hundred and fifty thousand shows per year. These presentations were a form of entertainment that reached the humblest locations and Offering joy and education to the masses. Before we begin. Settle down. And start to consciously slow your breathing. Mentally acknowledge any thoughts that intrude on your relaxation. Gently putting them to bed. By the night. It's a gentle summer afternoon. and the air is filled with the promise of a beautiful evening to come. This is where our story begins.
The whole town had been humming for weeks with anticipation. Since the day the posters had first appeared, announcing that the traveling magic lantern show was coming. The locals had been talking about what a treat it would be. Everyone from the elderly folk. Down to the children. I'd been eagerly anticipating the arrival of mister Cartwright's spectacular stereopticon display. Georgie and his friends had spent far too much time gawking in front of the advertisements. A stereo opticon sounded very fancy and expensive. But Georgie's father said that normal folks just called it a magic lantern. Still, his dad admitted.
