I've made my very first investment now, which is exciting, but I'm thinking, what comes after that? Do I just keep it simple or is there more that I could be doing? So today I'm going to look at how I can spice things up a little bit if I want to and take my investing to the next level.
This episode is brought to you by BetaShares Direct.
Hello and welcome back to Get Started Investing, a show that helps you make the most of your money. I'm Jess and in this series, I'm getting invested from scratch. In the last episodes, I made my very first investments, building my foundations of the portfolio. I started with ETFs. Today, I want to understand what the next step could look like for me. How do you go from building a simple starting point portfolio to having a little bit more fun? I'm going to be joined by Gemma Mitchell. She's a financial advisor and podcast host at Rask. She's going to help me unpack the different ways that I can build on my solid foundation. Plus, I speak to one of our community members about how they took things up a notch after getting all of the investing basics right.

Now, let's get into my chat with Gemma. Gemma, welcome to Get Started Investing. I'm very excited to have you here.
I am so excited to be here. I've been following your journey and I'm so excited to be part of it.
Thank you so much. So I'm also very excited to say that I have started investing now. Congratulations.
You are an investor.
I'm an investor. Jess is an investor. It feels crazy. And I started in broad-based ETFs. I've heard the words core and satellite thrown around a little bit so far, but We haven't gotten too deep into that, which is what I want to cover today. But also, portfolio construction has been thrown around a bit. So I kind of want to start, what is portfolio construction? What do people mean when they're saying that?
Yes. So this is one of the things, there's so many different words and people explain it differently or call it different things. But essentially, those words you said, core and satellite, they are a type of... portfolio construction. So your portfolio is everything that you've got in your investment and how you construct that, how you decide what goes in it and how much is your strategy and how you're going to put it together. So people might have properties, ETFs like you now have, they could have lots of different things in there. So the portfolio is everything and the construction of it, it's good to have a strategy when you get started of where, like some guidelines, a bit of a Think of it as putting it on rails.
This is how I want to do stuff. These are the percentages, a bit of guidelines so that as we were talking before we hit record, new things come up all the time and it can be like, oh, shiny thing. Should I be doing that? So think of the portfolio construction as some guidelines for what you're comfortable with. So that helps when you're getting started. because you know what you're doing. You've got direction.
