Why do moms lose confidence when summer routines disappear?
That measuring stick is what we're tying our self-worth to. It's what we're running our ability to run our household by. But we don't really have a measuring stick in summer because summer rolls around, everybody, neighbors, aunts, uncles, everybody loosens the reins. And so that really causes us some stress to say, okay, but what is it that's important to me? How do I know if I'm doing a good job? Nobody in our inner circle is reassuring us so we have to rely on our own ability to see our success. Hey mama, welcome to the Habit Stacking Mom Show. Do you want to feel less exhausted and burnt out by motherhood? Do you find yourself up late at night googling daily routines and more energy? Do you wake up with big, ambitious goals only to feel overwhelmed managing everyone else's expectations and ignoring your own?
Hey, I'm Jess. I too am a mom of littles who teetered on the edge of burnout. I felt extremely defeated chasing kids all day, and I wished I didn't feel like a constant failure. I wanted to stop losing patience with my kids and husband and create some structure, but the unpredictability in my home I had no idea. How to make that happen. Until I found a better way to organize my daily routines. In this podcast, you will find a plan to create balance, strategies to declutter your home and mind, and tips to boost your energy and confidence. You'll feel so much more accomplished each day and show up stronger for your family. It's time to pop in your ear pods, shake up your fizz, and let's get stacking. Hey
mamas, welcome back. So I'm so excited that you've taken a second to listen to this episode today because I know being in full-blown summer mode makes it sometimes hard to stay consistent with our routines. So some of the things that we do on a predictable day to day basis throughout that school year really get thrown to the sideline come summer. And so it's just not uncommon. It really is one of those things that happens very naturally for mom. We have a tendency to get into default mode. You know what that is. We take care of the thing that's right in front of us first. We throw all plans out the window. We're no longer actually even following any form of a schedule because it's unnecessary in summer.
And it's very important that you do pause long enough to enjoy the moment.
How does the lack of a summer “measuring stick” affect our sense of success?
I think having slower mornings to sit down with your kiddos is just so important. I did that the other day. I came downstairs to the back bedroom. With my cup of coffee in hand, and I sat with my oldest for 30 minutes before the other two even joined us. I just sipped on my coffee. She watched her show and we just spent time together. We didn't really have any plans. We were just sitting together. Then the other two came down and sat with us for a few more minutes. And then I decided, okay, I should kick off the breakfast routine. Why? Because otherwise We're gonna start fighting and yelling at each other because we're hangry. So I got up and made breakfast. But I didn't have to get ready because the bus wasn't coming at eight oh five.
Instead, I got to spend that time just being present with her and having no agenda. Know where we had to be. And what was interesting, my mommy anxiety was going through the roof. It drives me crazy. I'm starting to think, okay, oh, we need to feed the kids. It's time to feed the kids. They've got to eat. They're gonna get cranky. All things that I'm programmed to do in the school year started flooding into those feelings and emotions I was having while I'm sitting there. I'm just sitting there with my oldest. It's really my habits subconsciously surfacing. Because my brain is thinking, wait a minute, wait, this is not what we normally do. Where did the routine go? What's next? We forgot something. My brain has become so conditioned to predict that sequence, what's happening next in the moment, that when I step outside of that, it starts looking for problems that don't even exist, but it's gonna find them.
It's gonna build my cortisol level up and make me get really anxious. I'm curious: do you find yourself doing the same thing when the reins of the
