How does Jess define a true morning routine for busy moms?
Okay, let's get at it. So a morning routine. That word gets tossed around an awful lot, so let's talk about what it is and what it isn't. These are all the tasks that you do from the moment you wake up. Things that you do with yourself, your children, and your home as you prepare for the day. That is what I consider your morning routine. All these tasks together create a routine, and it starts when you wake up and it usually ends with a kitchen reset. It's not something that you can skip. Regardless if you think you have a routine or not, you definitely do. Some of you wake up, stumble into the kitchen, make a cup of coffee, and wait for your kids to get up, and that's it. Scroll on Instagram for a while.
I would consider that your morning routine. It's not very efficient, but it is a morning routine nonetheless. Some of you wake up, take a shower, brush your teeth, put your clothes on, maybe do a workout. Start a batch of laundry, do the dishes. Well, I would also consider that a morning routine. This one is likely a bit more efficient. A morning routine is not determined by how productive you are. When I'm looking at somebody's morning routine to see if it's effective or not. I'm actually looking at it through the lens of
What outcomes should I aim for when designing my morning routine?
Does it accomplish the outcome you're looking for? So let's talk about outcomes. When it comes to motherhood, during the school year, it's likely getting the kids out the door to school on time. And ideally, you stay calm and everything runs smoothly. That would be a perfect outcome. But during the summer, that looks a little different. It's likely a core of that normal routine that you're actually doing. You're not doing the entire routine. it maybe highlights the most important tasks because perhaps the mornings are a little bit more relaxed. Kids get up a little later. Things aren't maybe as important to you as they normally are because you have nowhere to go. So that outcome for your morning would set you up for whatever the middle of your day looks like.
If you're heading to the pool for the day, that's what you would be executing in your morning routine. You'd be packing that bag to go to the pool. The outcome you're looking for is to not forget anything. You don't want to head to the pool and forget a bunch of stuff. And another side of that is you have to understand what's happening when you return from the pool. So you might be looking at, well, it's going to be nap time, or we're going to get back before lunch, or maybe you're coming back before dinner. I look forward to the days I can do that and we don't have naps to deal with. But I'm evaluating that when I'm in my morning routine. I'm thinking through all my pillars. Does my laundry need to get done?
What about my dishes? What condition do I want them in? In the dishwasher or do I want the dishwasher emptied when I walk in the door? Because I'm not coming back until way late at night. That's an outcome. That's what I'm thinking about when I'm designing my morning routine. It's gonna be setting me up for the rest of the day. And it's also gonna be leaving me in a certain state of mind.
