Why is July the ideal month for moms to start back‑to‑school planning?

Jess Przulj 0:01
Hey, hey mamas, welcome to Focus Stack Thursday. This is the new format for our Thursday episodes where we're gonna take what we talked about on Monday and we're gonna apply that conversation to your real life, giving you action steps or simple stack challenges, anything that you can take and actually apply over your weekend. So this is your opportunity to stack right alongside me, rework, redesign the routines that you live in your life. Let's get to it. Hey mamas, welcome back. So I hope you're ready to get into it today. Last episode, we talked about why July is my favorite planning season. I know that probably sounds a little bit backwards because most people think of January as that time for a fresh start, but I really do believe that for moms, we operate more on a school year schedule than we do a calendar year.
Jess Przulj 1:01
Wouldn't you agree? We're not thinking January. To January, we're thinking August to August. Because as our children grow, every new school year brings new expectations. There are new teachers, new homework routines, new extracurricular activities, schedules, new responsibilities. So every year looks different than the one before it. It's not the same, it doesn't repeat. So that's why planning has become so important. Important to me. Motherhood taught me that I can't simply pick up last year's routine and drop it into this year. Although I would love to be able to do that. We need to expect that everything is not going to work the same. Every season asks something completely different of us, which is why moms tend to get a little stressed this time of year.
Jess Przulj 1:51
But that's why I like to think ahead before the school year even starts. I want to start thinking about the difference between this year's routine and next year's routine. Because I don't want to be thinking about that when I'm sitting across from the teacher hearing everything that's expected over the next nine months. That's not the time. I wanna be thinking, hmm, this is gonna be a long year. I may not know every single detail, but But I usually know enough that I can begin to prepare. I have a pretty good idea what third grade is going to kind of look like, or what sports my kids may or may not want to try.

How does the mental‑clutter brain dump habit clear space for intentional planning?

Jess Przulj 2:29
I know my youngest is moving into first grade. Well, I remember what first grade sort of felt like, and it's not going to be perfect down to a science, but I have an idea. So today I want to show you just one. One small piece of what that preparation looks like. I'm not going to walk you through my entire planning process because this fall I will be hosting a live workshop and we are going to build your next season together from start to finish. It's going to be one heck of a workshop. But today I just want to show you that very first step because I think it's such a simple one. It's so small. And I I talk about it all the time, but honestly, it's the one that creates the biggest mental relief. So before I begin, I want you to go down to the show notes and download the weekly stacking guide.
Jess Przulj 3:20
It's just a reflection tool. This will also have a routine builder section that you may refer back to later as we start building this out. But the main thing is to get you thinking how your week has been flowing over the summer. How's it been going Monday through Sunday? What's been working? What's not been working? Have you been making the adjustments we've been talking about on the podcast? Or have you been just being a professional student? Just coming and listening Mondays and Thursdays and saying, That sounds like a great idea. I should implement that. And then you don't. And honestly, it's totally okay. You're not alone in that. It's been a rough summer for a lot of us. However That weekly focus guide is really your ability to sit down, think about what's been working this summer, what you're going to keep as you move into the school year.
Jess Przulj 4:12
So scroll down to the bottom, snag that in the show notes, get your copy and print it out. It's going to be an awesome tool for you. So July is the perfect month for this because we finished the fourth.
