What is autopilot and why does our brain create habits on it?

Jess Przulj 0:00
A well designed routine can organize your habits in a way That gives you mental protection at the same time. So you're not so exhausted all the time. So we create a routine and then we practice that routine in the same sequence until we get the outcome we want. And I think so many moms believe that they're undisciplined. I don't. Hey mamas, welcome back. So I am coming to you today from an empty house. I cannot tell you how much these few hours just refill my cup like tenfold. over like a full night's sleep. It does wonders. Just quiet time without anyone needing me for anything. No water refills, spills, playdate requests, missing shorts, nothing. Just silence that you used to take for granted, right? It's funny because you don't realize how valuable quiet time is until you spend 10 straight weeks with three little humans needing something from you every five minutes. Quickly into the summer break, you realize they aren't going anywhere. You are having to learn new schedules and de-escalating skills at a rapid speed to prevent sibling conflicts, tantrums, all of that.
Jess Przulj 2:25
Nothing can prepare you for being turned on non-stop. 24-7. And I'm not talking about the good kind of turn on. I'm talking about the non-stop battery running out, forgot to plug you back in kind of turned on. It happens every year, regardless of the planning, scheduling, organizing that we do. It'll inevitably unravel at some point. Kids just get over it. The novelty wears off, the routines get sloppy, everyone gets bored, and the entertainment threshold gets so much higher. I find myself saying, go find something to do. So a quiet house, you guys. Nobody here but me. I can't even tell you how excited I am right now. My kids have figured out how to get adult YouTube on our TV and they've been watching YouTube shorts.
Jess Przulj 3:18
Now, I don't allow that, but somehow my account must have gotten logged in on the TV. And so I came downstairs to the kitchen. I was doing some dishes and it dawns on me. What are they watching? It's ridiculous. I don't mean it was inappropriate. I mean if you keep watching it, you will absolutely start breaking your brain cells. It was so ridiculous. The material on there is so goofy and yet it captivates you in like 3.2 seconds. You're completely hooked on the next video, the next one, the next one. These short videos just hop from one to the next, which means my kids can lose about forty five minutes just sitting there gaining absolutely nothing out of it. And I don't even know how they even stand it.
Jess Przulj 4:06
I don't even notice it right away because I'm so used to hearing noise all the time that it didn't quite dawn on me what they were watching. But what I find interesting about some of our flexibility this summer. Is that they're drawn to it. And if I let them, they will absolutely sit on the couch and watch it all day long. They have no idea how long it's been on. You know, I'm like, how long has this been on?
