But nothing to do with the on-pitch product, Jason. More drama yesterday in the world of the Whitecaps.
Yeah, I guess there's a bunch of important people in town right now, soccer-wise, for the FIFA Congress. Very important people. Don Garber, MLS commissioner, I assume, is one of them. And I think, I'm not assume, I know he is here. And he met with Premier David Eby. And David Eby had a message that, for Vancouver Whitecaps fans before he went and met with Garber. And this was the message.
Premier David Aby here. To every Whitecaps fan in British Columbia and around the world, I want you to know we are working hard to save the Whitecaps. For 50 years, the Whitecaps have been part of the fabric of British Columbia. From the 79 championship and the 100,000 fans who paraded downtown, to 2011 when they joined MLS at their home in Empire Field. The Whitecaps are British Columbia.
And I want you to know that we are at the table fighting hard to save the Whitecaps. We have the World Cup coming. We are a world-class football town. Losing the Whitecaps is not an option.
Chapter 5: How did the Vancouver Whitecaps drama unfold?
I saw the shots of the fans out at the rally to save the Whitecaps. We are on the same side. We will fight hard to save our team.
Now, I had a bunch of prep notes made last night, and I was going to get into what David Eby said and what comes next, etc., etc. But I can still do that. But I first want to address... What happened last night on social media? Because that message that we just played, it was a video, not just audio. It was a video. It was posted to David Eby's account. Okay? Yep.
And there were a bunch of replies like, I hope the Whitecaps stay. And then... Eventually, there was a reply that said, liar, liar, pants on fire. Exact wording. And, you know, it's a politician talking, so it's not a surprise that someone would call a politician a liar and accuse him of his pants being aflame. Yes. But here's the thing. That message came from Don Garber, MLS commissioner.
And it was around like 9 o'clock last night.
So the original reply to David Eby's post came at 9 p.m. yesterday. It was from the official verified account of MLS Commissioner Don Garber. And it said, as you mentioned, liar, liar, pants on fire. It stayed live on X for approximately one hour until around 10 p.m. It was deleted, followed up by a flurry of messages from MLS's communications director saying,
who had jumped on to reply to several of the replies saying that Commissioner Garber did not post the reply to David Eby and that his account was compromised. Later, that same account, the official Don Garber account, again, verified on X with a blue check as the official account of the MLS commissioner.
posted, and I don't know who posted from it, but said that the earlier correspondence with EB was not that of the commissioner and that his account, his director of communication said his account had been compromised.
I'll read his tweet right now. My account was compromised earlier this evening. The issue has been resolved. I appreciate Premier EB for taking the time to meet with me today. So... Why was there only one reply from this compromised account?
How did he get access to his compromised account after losing it to an alleged hacker?

This is more than just like... To be fair, no one from the actual Don Garber MLS verified account used the word hacked. But whatever the case, I feel as though...

He's like, I apologize. I thought I was on my burner account. It could have been that maybe Garber doesn't actually tweet and that someone handles that account for Garber. And perhaps that they... had logged into the account or had access to the account, thereby at least giving some credence to the notion that technically it was compromised because it wasn't Garber. Whatever the case.
Whatever the case, this is... Theater of the absurd, man. This is... That's what that is. It feels to me like this is more than just someone guessed his password, got in there, and made that reply, right? I would imagine. This is either... I'm kind of with you on that, Jason. This is either...
he meant to, I don't know, DM or something like that, or maybe he had someone working for him that thought he was on his account, and he replied that. It's not good.
Look, I'll just jump in right now. There is a history... of Don Garber being publicly critical of the provincial government, maybe not in a necessarily direct way, but over the last few years, whenever the subject of BC place was brought up, because Garber is obviously very cognizant of how the arena works, the situation, who owns it, who operates it, who's the landlord and who's the tenant.
And he has been less than complimentary on a number of occasions. And I have been told that, that one of the major sticking points to this day, even though years have passed, was the now infamous motocross fiasco in which they had to move a playoff game from BC Place to Portland because they did not have stadium availability.
That has stuck in MLS's craw for the longest time because it was an awful look for a league that was trying to get out of that garage league mentality and perception.

You know, it was his opinion, even though he's not provincial government, that whitecaps need to just come to the table and say, this is what we need. And I don't know if there's been a moving of the goalposts from the whitecaps.
And then again, there will be some people that say like, well, they're not going to give you that answer because they don't know that answer because their plan all along has been to move the team. Whether that's fair or not, people will say that. We are Vancouver. We have been through things with teams that have relocated. We have been lied to. Now, EB also said that
that the Whitecaps have shown absolutely no interest in taking over BC Place. And that's one of the things we wondered. We wondered, maybe they just want to run this thing. How many times have we heard that? I feel like it's been reported that the Whitecaps...
Or at least maybe MLS has indicated that that's something that they would like to control the stadium and see if they can do a better job of making money at it. Now, that's not necessarily something even if the Whitecaps do want that.
That's not necessarily something that the province will want to do because the province doesn't see BC Place as purely a money-making venture, which is all about business. There are...
multiple uses for bc play some of which will be profit like you're gonna have your concerts etc and they're gonna hope to make some money off that but then you know that they probably feel that they're just like break even with the the white caps or the bc lines because having those teams is good for the province and then there are events like you know
soccer days for kids where they go out there and play on the field and high school football championships they have a tournament i i don't think those are um i don't think those are money makers those are just you know the bc place is there for the good of the province and for the good of the people of the province so you know even the white cap said like we want to take this thing over when i'm trying to make money um
You know, the province might be like, yeah, but are you still going to do like those sorts of things? You know, so there's a lot to discuss on this, but I can't keep, I just keep coming back to the liar, liar, pants on fire because I need to know what happened there.

No, I think the question will be if they're going to run it in a way that they see more efficiently and with greater profits, does that cut out some of the community-oriented events that go on at BC Place that are loss leaders? You're running them at a deficit or whatever. Are those important enough to the community that they want to keep them?
Or is the idea that the Whitecaps are going to run this purely as a for-profit venue going to, I don't know, upset the taxpayers or make people reconsider what that facility is supposed to be about? Here's a question.
Is there a part of you that wonders if they've even really considered running the stadium or if they're just... I mean, this is so cynical, or if they're just convinced, like, we're gone.
I can understand how some people would say... They're going to throw this idea out there knowing that it's never going to get past.
Or it's not going to be this ownership group that's going to run it. Sure. You know, like we haven't really thought about it.
It could be a hollow gesture and an empty promise where they're like, well, we would certainly love to run the facility knowing that they're never going to get a shot to do it anyway. I hope it's not that. But I mean, this is an inherently cynical show and it would not be past us to throw that out there. Mm hmm. I mean, what do you want me to say?
Like, if you follow the playbook of a lot of franchises that have relocated, there's a lot of hollow, empty gestures along the way.
