Firenze, la città più ricca del mondo, era governata dal popolo. Il governo era in mano alle Arti, le corporazioni di mestieri che rappresentavano il mondo del lavoro. Ma nelle Arti chi contava erano gli imprenditori, i banchieri, gli industriali, tutt’al più i bottegai: non certo gli operai dell’industria tessile, i ciompi, che lavorando i panni a domicilio creavano la ricchezza della città.
