Now, welcome everyone. Football is on the agenda today. I should say the Indoor Sport Movie Club makes a triumphant long awaited return tomorrow, but it's football today. Jonathan Wilson will give us the view on Gianni Infantino. A week being a long time in politics and all that. A week ago, it would have felt pretty much inevitable that a fourth term as FIFA president was incoming. He had the votes. Even the likes of the English FA had publicly backed him as recently as June. All of that has changed. The English FA now amongst those who've retracted their support. So a few things to touch on, Aidan, I wanted to get your thoughts on. Summer football has been shelved by the FAI. Shamrover's bows, shells, all in European action. The context here is obviously James McLean came home. There was a little bit of romance to the story and he was going to finish his career at Derry and he was looking forward to it. And, you know, Derry made a lot of signings in the off-season and looked like they were coming into this season in very good shape. And they've had a dreadful season so far.
I think they're maybe eight points off the bottom and 21 off the top or something like that. So... They haven't really laid a glove on anyone at the top end. And there does seem to be, there seems to be issues now. I mean, like relative underachievement kind of, it does predate McLean in terms of the year that Shelburne won the league. Derry really should have, like, should have, that was a great chance for him to win the league that year and Shelds. got over the line and there he didn't so I mean that that predates McLean as well like McLean's social media stuff and all that like you can't say it's helping like in any shape or form really it doesn't seem to be helping the team in terms of their performance it's since you put more focus and pressure on the manager and then like Roddy Collins in the mix as well and he's you know he's responding to this that and the other but
Yeah, like there's been a big underachievement there, I think, in the last couple of years. They've done okay. I thought they acquired themselves quite well in Europe this year, like where they played CSKA and I think it's Rijeka from Croatia. And they only, they lost each game, but they lost each game by a goal. Just, yeah, it seems very unhelpful for a player to be coming out with that kind of stuff. Yeah.
So we touched on this in bits and bobs, but just to give you the immediate backstory against Rijeka, he was an unused sub in the first leg. And then Thursday night in Derry, wasn't included in the matchday squad, turned up in a baseball camp, which said Joker. And he was kind of posing for the cameras and pointing to it and seemed to be in kind of jovial-ish spirits. They lost 1-0 to Rijeka, Croatian team, 2-0 on aggregate. So that's the European campaign over Rijeka. Did okay against CSKA Sofia, but lost those matches as well. And I guess that's that. They go home, but then McLean pops up on Instagram and he's talking about Rovers, Bows, Shells. They've all progressed through ties in Europe this year.
We've played four, lost four, and sorry. It needs to be said, we have every much as good, if not better squad on paper as those clubs. So if you watch the games, the lads are not losing these games based on a lack of effort.
