What is Joe’s first impression of Manhattan and Midtown on arrival in New York?
Happy to say I am coming to you from New York, New York. Where this Sunday coming, France, Spain, Argentina or England will be crowned world champions. Now, across the week here, we'll have some great guests, I'm happy to say. Jonathan, of course, is of England and he has literally written the book on Argentinian football. So he was the perfect man to track down today. Before that though, a little taste of New York City. I am conscious as gigs go, this is a sweet few days, so I might as well bring you some Manhattan while I'm here.
So to set the scene... This is Sunday morning. There are a few cobwebs. I have had a good 26 straight hours awake from doing rugby on Virgin Saturday morning to overnight flight Saturday evening leaving Dublin. My efforts to stream England Norway were unsuccessful. Thank you for the many suggestions. I did watch Gladiator 2 on the flight and having heard it was not very good, I found it very acceptable. So there you go. Low expectations in life go a long way. So I staggered into my hotel, bleary-eyed. I got some kip and was ready to go on Sunday morning. Now I'm staying in Midtown. If you don't know New York, that is bang in Manhattan in Touristville, Times Square. You cannot move for I Love New York t-shirts.
So 9am and already outside. It is hot. July here is no joke. Highs of 34 degrees this week. Also, a weird thing to throw in, but it would be remiss of me not to mention. That's what I'm saying to my friends at home. the whole place stinks of weed the second you step onto the street it hits you i was last here in 2018 so it's been a minute and i do not remember this being a thing but more of that and on as ever when you first arrive here you do spend the first hour or so noticing the yellow taxis and the green street signs and just generally looking up at the engineering miracle that is manhattan And there is something very blue about a blue New York sky. It is just an amazing place to be.
First port of call was breakfast, eggs, coffee, sourdough, sausage. La Pecora Bianca is off Bryant Park in Midtown. Bryant Park is a beautiful spot generally, and the food, so good. Two thumbs up. Very peaceful, nice air con. Caffeine was working its magic. Maybe I'm just stoned. I have told Dan McDonald I will take him there for breakfast tomorrow morning. And then, what does one do at 11am? Well, there is only one option.
Go to a pub to watch the All-Ireland Semi-Final.

Now, look, I'd only been here for four hours.
I can't quite class myself as an emigrant this stage.
But, honestly, as I walked towards the Westbury pub and I heard Ger Canning's beautiful voice through the doors, I did feel a tear in my eye.
And as with all good pubs, there were lots of interesting people there. For instance, shout out to Ellen. She's from Dublin. She's 22 years old, working behind the bar. She gave me free refills of coffee. And she's here on a J1 with her boyfriend.

I'm just here for the summer on a J1. So it's my last year of college. So my last year to do one. So I thought I'd come. New York's a good city to do it in, I thought.
First time here?
no I've been on a few trips only for a few days though but this is the longest I've been here for I'm just here with my boyfriend so just me and him in the apartment but there's loads it's really easy to make friends and the accommodation everyone's Irish everyone's the same age so yeah
And is it work, work, work, or are you having a good time?
No, both, yeah. Actually, the work is quite fun because I never worked in a bar at home before. But the work doesn't feel like work when you're chatting to people all day and people are having a crack, so it's good. But no, I've definitely done a lot of exploring and socialising.
