Leinster's fifth consecutive Champions Cup final defeat, although this was very different to the ones that have come before it. I'm delighted to be joined in studio for our chat. Rudd, I know you and Keane had a bit of a chat after the game on Saturday, a couple of days on. I'd be interested to know kind of where you're at with this game.
Like... Obviously, Leinster were underdogs going into it. There was a sense that this has been their performance-wise their stickiest season in probably 10 years. One narrative was that they could be building to a big performance on Saturday, that their form had maybe upticked in the last couple of weeks. The other narrative was that potentially going up against an elite team would expose how they've been playing all season and magnify it even greater. 35-7 down at half-time points kind of to the latter pretty much. What jumps out to you about what you watched on Saturday first and foremost?
Well, I think we saw one of the great European teams confirm that they are one of the great European teams. And we are now in the era of UBB, Union Bordeaux-Begla. I think they're not going anywhere. They're going to be the dominant force in this competition for the next couple of years, along with probably Toulouse. We're in the French era, six wins in a row for French clubs. Yeah. And the fear from an Irish point of view and from Leinster's point of view coming away from Bilbao this weekend is it feels like they're getting further away with each passing year and that their window has either closed or is very much closing in terms of adding that fifth star with this group of players. I thought it was a magnificent weekend.
I know... Bilbao was a difficult place to get to from an Irish point of view, but as a host venue, it was phenomenal. The way rugby took over a city in a country that doesn't have a hugely strong, even though there is good, strong rugby in the Basque country, you know, a city that doesn't have a professional rugby team was taken over and... embraced it and it was colourful. There was fans there from all four Irish provinces. There was fans there from French, English clubs and beyond. And that was really cool, really enjoyable. The weather was... unbelievable and borderline just too much really especially on Friday night it was so stuffy within the stadium but it was an amazing reminder of what the Champions Cup in particular is and why it needs to be built on and protected and why the destination final in different cities around Europe it was so much more vibrant than a Six Nations weekend so that was great but to go back to the game and from an analysis point of view I thought it was a very disappointing Leinster performance
One that they'll have huge regrets for, one that opens up huge questions about their future direction, their coaching ticket, these players. It was a damaging day. The worst of their five final defeats by a long way. And then on Friday night, Ulster had a really difficult night at the office as well in quite similar circumstances.
