What news sparked the season‑ending locker cleanout?
What's up, champs? Welcome to another episode of the Short Shifts Fantasy Hockey Podcast brought to you by Keeping Carlson. I'm Lewis Ezekiel joining you here on a lovely Tuesday evening. My season seven regular season finale here. It's been so fun uh having the opportunity uh to talk hockey uh with all of the great patrons and Uh to get uh reach out to all of the listeners. So thank you so much for the opportunity. It has been a Great time. Can't believe it's been seven years already. Hope you really enjoyed getting to know some new Short Shifts hosts. And we might have something for you before too long with a bunch of us hosts working together. So stay tuned. We're not done with content, but you know, like I said, this will be my last regular season game here or uh show here, I should say.
Uh you can tell it's that. Time of year, you know, like a million soccer practices a day, running around to track practice to pick people up, you know. It's the the the the trees are budding outside. You can tell it's almost playoff hockey time. The real playoffs, of course. Uh, if you have completed your fantasy hockey playoffs, uh great job. I hope you did well. Hopefully the advice that you got from the show assisted you. Um, and if you're just listening bec you know, with your season done, all the better for ya, right? You're getting ready for You know, stay tuned into the information, always be learning and preparing for that next season. I'll indulge myself very briefly. Uh, my season ended uh with a playoff run, but I was defeated by the eventual champion of my division, Astro Glacial.
So well done to you. Congratulations uh to Buddy and longtime co-tier one managers. Jordan. Uh Jordan became the longest tenured Tier 1 manager after I fell out of Tier 1 contention and kept falling. But congratulations to him. Really exciting that he has uh finally, after many years, uh fighting for the you know battling it out in tier one and staying in tier one, which is no easy feat to win an ultimate championship. Really awesome. Very happy for him. But let's get to the news. By no means am I gonna attempt to try to replace a mega show from Sunday, but I'll at least try to give us a decent roundup of some of the weekend's news and obviously the early week as well. Some big news. Patrick Waugh was fired from the New York Islanders.
Uh brought in Peter Deboer to be the new coach. We did see some line changes at least. In practice. Uh Lee with Horvat and Holmstrom. Shen with Barzal and Richie is obviously the important, you know, top six there. That means Holmstrom has moved up. Heineman has moved down to the third line. Barzall with Richie and Shen is probably an upgrade from Holmstrom and JG Pajot from last game. We'll see what it looks like on the ice. I'm always hesitant to make any predictions about what a coaching change might do. But in this case, uh maybe we will less frequently see uh the Islanders pull the goalie with, you know, five ish minutes left and maybe we'll wait until we get down to that two, three minute period.
Uh We had uh a milestone as Parker Kelly hit 20 goals on Sunday. He came in for some love from Jared Bednar. Uh said he can't ignore what he's doing, scoring like a second liner. Um, maybe more than a second liner. Val Nishushkin, uh despite two goals today, still uh has fewer goals than Parker Kelly. So good on him. Could be interesting to see where he lands in the lineup since uh he is is playing in a way that his coach can't ignore. Um, you know, uh, I guess we can cover a little more news. I was gonna wait for the injuries and outjuries section, but as long as we're talking Colorado, it's worth pointing out that uh Kale McCarr missed uh Tuesday Tuesday's game with an injury. We saw Devon Taves on power play one.
Uh Nishushkin was out for a game, but came back, as we said, to score two games through two periods as of This recording, including a shorty from Nelson. Um, not really the season, I think, that a lot of people who drafted Nishushkin, myself included, hope to see. Um, so lesson learned probably on that one: that he is more of a middle six guy, and uh there are quite a few people ahead of him on that power play one.
