How did Anthony McNaughton achieve redemption at Worlds after a rapid turnaround?

6 Pack Lapadat 0:01
My man. Um so first off, this has been a hell of a ride for you. From Last Worlds, you clinch your first world title, dominating performance, and everyone's thinking Anthony McNaught we're welcome to the Anthony McNaughton era. And um Then Trials and tribulations, Sheffield unexpected situation. Um Keenan Lee wins the battle, takes the world record with no turnaround time at all. You got to do American nationals, and everyone's like, holy shit. Not only do you have to do it, you have to like you like clinch your spot within how many weeks was that?
John Song 0:39
Uh what was it like? It was a couple of months. I can't think of the exact weeks. Very t quick turnaround nevertheless. Very tur quick turnaround, nevertheless, for international travel, etc.
6 Pack Lapadat 0:47
Um, then injuries leading it to worlds and the the world records, you know, stuck where it is. You've got to get not only win, but 95%. If you're gonna get back to Sheffield, um there's a lot to unpack here. We could walk through, and then ultimately, um, everybody knows worst kept secret, Keenan is on North American team. He's gonna try to take his stab at whatever the world record is and push it and end up at Sheffield for a frickin' rematch and we're gonna run it back, which everybody's gonna be super excited for talking about hype for another showdown. But what a frickin' year from last year's worlds to this year's worlds. Um let's unpack this.
Anthony McNaughton 1:29
Right on. There's a lot. Yeah, I don't even know where to start with this, but uh there is a lot to unpack. Um Like you said, it was a really quick turnaround. Uh I feel like I was in the gauntlet for this last year. And I think a lot of it was adjusting to the high level of competition, but also the frequency of it. Um in the past I've always had time to take an extended off season and build. And uh I was super fortunate to have that. But being thrown in the gauntlet it it it forced me to really be To grow some grit. Um I don't even know where to really start. I mean Obviously at Sheffield we had an undesirable outcome. Um we just weren't the the better lifter on the day. Um
6 Pack Lapadat 2:13
And y you know, we talked about that brief. Sorry to cut you off, but maybe we do have to start there because w we talked right afterwards, but you had time to leave and think about that.
Anthony McNaughton 2:23
Yeah. Now that you reflect. Yeah. That that flight home, that travel home, I mean, it was just like this stinging pain. Uh really until not I I really want to say till yesterday. Um, even with my nationals debut and and doing a good job there, um, it just wasn't to my liking. And yesterday just seemed to to really clear it up. But yeah, that ride home, that flight home, I was First off, I was window seat. I I really don't like window seats. So my brain was just going already. And the fact that I had that that nagging pain of, oh, like if only we just pulled that third deadlift, which realistically, I mean, was a pretty pretty tolerable load. It's just um we weren't ready. And uh Yeah, yeah. It's it was a lot to debunk mentally, but it definitely created a a strong period of training for me.
6 Pack Lapadat 3:18
Mm. And so then American Nationals rolls around. Um you have another opportunity to make Team USA. Very quick turnaround though. But you did make a statement there. You posted up uh a total that was bigger than the world record, um so obviously unofficial because it's American nationals. But you were saying so How much did that mean to you? First off, it it meant a lot to get the worlds again, but to post up that total. But then you had also said there was still a bit of a sting. Um so maybe What did it mean to you to hit it? And did you think ahead of time, look if I hit this, I write the ship. Go back to your to your house, your robe, you you lay your head in your pillow, you're like, No, still got that taste in my mouth or how was it?
Anthony McNaughton 4:01
So I ultimately. I had you know, I had to beat that that record total and I and I did. Um so I was happ uh actually I was more relieved to do that. Um there was a lot of pressure. I think mentally I was I was less excited to do it and more like, okay, I just have to do it.
