Why is 2023 considered the best year for GB powerlifting on the world stage?
Alrighty. Um we got a couple G B shooters. You guys like team G B we're talking before we got up here, absolutely killing it this year. And this has got to be like Joey, you've been around forever and a day. Is this the best year Britain's done at the world championships on the classic side?
I think so, definitely in my memory. There's never been a time we've had so many champions or podium places to celebrate, so I think so.
Feels like every single frickin' day, um, and even like not just the champion, but to your point about like Germans coming in bronze, Christian silver, um, Joshua Silver, everywhere. And some of these people on nominations were back and pulling off the wins. It's uh it's been huge. Do you guys I ran into Nathaniel, we were walking around the the like little Man-made lake and he was out there, it was like midnight. I was with the French team just getting my steps in chilling. And we I saw uh Nathaniel Messiah walking around with his hoodie on. I'm like, my man, you all good out here? By himself, and he's like, Man, we're doing so good. Like, I I feel some pressure, like I'm next up. Um, do you feel like what do you guys feel the vibe was like in terms of GB?
Do you guys is there a disguise? amongst you being like, Whoa, this is Oranwan this worlds.
I think so. It's kind of obviously Joy and Bobby started off the the good good trail of success and I think We're just wanting to add to that. Um as the day's gone on and we just celebrate each other. Few lifters haven't had quite as good days. We support them, celebrate them anyway, 'cause we all train hard, regardless of the result. But it's been been good in teen G to be this time.
Definitely good vibes amongst the team. Yeah, good vibes.
Is it um are the stars just aligning or is there an actual underlying reason for all this? Or is it or is it just the stars are aligning? Is is Great Britain the scene in powerlifting just rising with the talent and the participation rates? Um what do you guys think what would you attribute this to?
We've had loads of new and and recent people on the team. So they've only joined powerlifting in the last few years, like you say Nathaniel. Um we've got our super heavyweight ladies who are on later today and you know, they're here already at their first world championship. So it just shows how how quickly the sport is growing in G B. So we've just got a larger talent pool and in that pool there's just really strong people that are coming and getting medals and podium places here.
Is nationals far bigger now?
Yeah, definitely. Um so we've had s sort of different versions of nationals. So we've had where there's qualifying totals and in the past they've been Very achievable, I'll say. And that's meant we've had like quite broad and and big participation. And then we've had times where um qualify qualifying totals have changed. Um then we've had times where, you know, to get on the team you'd have to reach a minimum total. There's always different iterations of one, who turns up to nationals and two, who then makes it onto the team. Um in our last couple of of national disputes. sort of a smaller group of people, I think fourteen or something in each weight class, or sixteen maybe. Um, but we're moving back towards qualifying totals.
Um, which just means that there's more opportunities for people to get onto the team. But at the same time, G B is recognizing that the standard is growing. And so um to make it to make that step from national to international, they're recognising the the growth and uh the the rise in in talent and what it takes to be competitive internationally and taking that into account so that when we do get to these internationals we have such a good chance of of coming home with medals. Yeah.
Also uh like the biggest single day event Sheffield is in the UK. Um it's gotta help in terms of having such a massive event, all the fans and whatnot coming. You gotta think it's got it makes powerlifting exciting and cool in the UK, I'm sure. Uh when did you start powerlifting actually?
