So when we last left Gary Ridgeway, the year was 1984, and the murder spree that would make Gary one of the most prolific serial killers in American history was finally coming to a close. But while Gary had supposedly been trying to help the Green River Task Force by writing a letter to the authorities giving tips on how to bring his reign of terror to an end, his near-illegible communication had not impacted the investigation in any meaningful way. So in February of 1984, Gary Ridgway wrote another letter to two Seattle newspapers with the words, very important, written on the outside of the envelope.

They're very important. It helped that it looked like it was written by a serial killer. It's like a big V, little I, important spelled wrong. It looked like it was from a crazy person. But that's the incredible thing about Gary Ridgway is not known at all as a letter writer. You know, you talk about Zodiac, you talk about BTK. No one ever mentions Gary Ridgway as a letter writer.
He could barely paint. I legitimately believe what we're seeing here truly is the fact that they weren't cool. That Gary Ridgway wasn't cool? That the Gary Ridgway letters weren't cool. No. And the Zodiac letters, it makes sense because it's fascinating and it's the puzzle and it's all that kind of shit. And like all the Black Dahlia stuff is very interesting and compelling and all that.

Yeah, they always have to decide whether or not the letter is actually from the killer or not. It's very difficult in the midst of the investigation to tell which is which.
I know it's not fake, the fact that they found Nancy Guthrie's cat collection right outside of the North Pole. And I'm starting to think that maybe Santa's got something to do with Nancy Guthrie's naughty exit.

What contained in the very important envelope was a two-page letter. But while the one sent before was ostensibly meant to be helpful, this one was more about throwing police off Gary's trail. Good thing he didn't send it to them.
