Your team every day. Yes, welcome on in to Locked On Auburn, your daily Auburn Tigers podcast. I'm your host, Zach Blackerby.
Thank you so much for making Locked On Auburn your first listen every single day. Hunter Busse, host of the Auburn Social Hour over at the Bar in Auburn, thebarinauburn.com. Auburn loses in gut-wrenching fashion. 90 to 88 at the hands of Texas A&M in a situation they should not have been in. They absolutely fell apart in the second half.
I think it was one of the worst coaching jobs by Steven Pearl of the season. But Keyshawn Murphy. Keyshawn Murphy makes an incredible shot. They say it's amazing. They say it's a make on the floor. They review it in what felt like five minutes. Auburn's celebrating on the floor. There's a lull. They see something, Hunter, that cultivates them to start cheering again, and then they call it off.
I haven't seen anything like that in a hot minute.
They're talking about it now in the postgame, and they're just – I it's one of those things where I, and I want to know specifically, there was a shot. I don't know if y'all saw it. I think somebody mentioned in the chat, what was on the iPad that Steven gave to, I don't know who it was.
I guess she's, I don't know if she's some sort of official or whatever. Yeah. They had a steel frame. It looked like on the iPad where I'm guessing he saw the ball clearly out of Keyshawn Murphy's hands off of his fingertips and, And there were two angles. Like, the broadcast didn't show that many angles of it. They showed it from the side where you and I audibly both went like, oh.
Yeah.
And then there was a shot from behind where –
It looked like it was still in the pocket. Yeah. Dude, I don't know. Now, does that excuse them going on a 31-6 run? No, it doesn't.

Chapter 2: How did the coaching impact Auburn's performance?
Auburn had a 16-point lead with 13 minutes and 29 seconds left to go per stat broadcast.
Dude, that's – I just – I still can't believe that it happened like that. Like, that's just such a way to, like, have a heartbreaking game. Did we – I don't think we deserved to win that game. But to have something like that happen, that's just so crazy to me. That – oh, man.
Awful. Awful stuff. Like, hey, that would have been – what a great moment that would have been for Keyshawn Murphy. But, you know, I mean – When I first saw it, I didn't think it went in. And then the review from the side, I'm like, okay. And then the other one... I'm surprised he overturned it. I'm surprised he overturned it, if I'm being honest with you.
Yeah, I want to know what you were talking about. What were they celebrating about the second time?
There was a wave of excitement from Auburn, then another wave of excitement from A&M, and then it bounced back to Auburn being excited, and then the refs come out and they said no good, and then Steven runs over and hands an iPad off to a mystery referee lady, and we don't know what – I don't know. I don't get it.
Yeah, I mean, look, Texas A&M was the better team for the vast majority of the game, especially in the second half. Texas A&M deserved to win this game.

Chapter 3: What was the controversy surrounding Keyshawn Murphy's final shot?
Some of the coaching, like, look, I've been pro-Steven. I can't defend him tonight. When the team looks defeated, he's just, during timeouts, he's just sitting there with his arms crossed looking at them.
Yeah, or, like, squatted down by the scorer's table. When, like, Bucky's over there, got his guys, you know, gathered, you know, trying to compose them and calm them down like Bruce would do. you know, last year and the years prior to.
Yeah, like, is the roster perfect? No. When you're getting bullied around by, like, a roster that's larger than you, like, that's one thing. We can say, like, yeah, the way this roster is built, like, it's going to get bullied. But what we saw against Georgia... And what we saw tonight, that is coaching. Yeah. Especially when both of them ended the way that they did.
Georgia obviously going to overtime, and then this one coming down to literally a 100th of a second. If you coach, it took way too long for him to get his guys to adjust to a press. It just seems like the plan always develops a little bit later than it needs to, and it costs them the game tonight.
Yeah, and I've been notorious for saying it's a chemistry thing. And to a degree, I think it still is because we've been so used to seeing a team that's been together for a while now. But those days are over. We have one returning player who has digressed and who isn't starting, I guess, because he's under some type of punishment. And it's just not helping.
And it's kind of just like an imperfect storm, if you will. And I hate that it's happening in Stephen's first year, but you can't let a lead go like that at home. Yeah, clearly have the momentum because I was telling you this on the barn cast like that. To me, that run going into half was going to be what was the key to the game for me until we came out there and.
essentially, you know, a crap the bed. You know what I mean? Like what, I don't know how you let a team go in a 31 to serve. Was it 31 or 33 to six? It doesn't matter. It's still crazy that it's that much of a difference.
Yeah. I mean, yeah. To have a 16 point lead where you had all the momentum. And then there was that series there where was it three turnovers, right? Like within like a minute, two of them were off of inbound passes. And it's just, what are you, well, you guys weren't ready for that. Like, how do you squander that?
And then it just seems like this team, whenever they get down late, they go through two phases. They go through a phase where like, okay, like we feel sorry for ourselves. And then when there's like, you know, two minutes left, they kick it into high gear. I mean, and then they almost closed it out. Right. With what we saw against Georgia and then Texas A&M tonight. It's just,

Goodness gracious, Hunter. I know. What a weird, I mean, it's just the dynamic of this is so, because, I mean, this is about Steven, in my opinion.
Tonight's game is about Steven, but the most interesting thing is what happened in the closing, what, 0.6 seconds there. Yeah. It's unreal.
Yeah, I still – I need to, like, go look at the clips because obviously, like, we didn't get a chance to look at everything. All the different angles that, you know, that are probably out there right now, and I'm sure there's pictures going around X right now, I'm sure. It's just – and I think I just saw it in the comments. It's like a microcosm of what happened in this game, honestly.
Just chaotic, you know. I just – I'm kind of speechless, honestly, that it ended like that. considering they were celebrating not once but twice. It's crazy. Yeah, that's what's interesting.
They must have saw something pretty convincing. Yeah.

Chapter 5: What were the factors leading to Auburn's defensive struggles?
Like, it's just one of those things. It's going to be like we were saying, it's going to be a long season. It's going to be a long season for sure. I will say, I think the one person that like, if we were talking about like, we just had a prediction on who could be a vocal leader on the team. I think Overton could be that guy. I really do. But again, someone has to do it.
Like, yeah, I've just got it. I want to give him the benefit of the doubt, but I just don't think tonight's the night to do it. I mean, Steven just standing there with his team just sulking. Yeah. With his arms crossed. And it was multiple timeouts in a row where he just stands there looking at it. And then it's like Bergermeister drawing the plays.
And I know he's more of the offensive guy and Steven's more of the defensive guy, but still be in the huddle. Bruce would be the guy that's still drawing all that up.
Yeah, and two, you brought this up, how he's kind of sulking. That possession before all the chaos happened with the buzzer beater, if we made it or not, he was crouching near the scorer's table, and Bucky's got his team in there, and they're strategizing, and Steven's over there like, I don't know what he was doing. You know what I mean?
Like, I don't, I don't know if he was looking at the individual pixels on the score table, what he was up to. And then the team's just out there looking lost and confused. Like, what are we doing?
Yeah. I mean, I liked it early on, but like, okay, this is different. Like he's not trying to be his dad, right? He's like trying to not trying to like out Bruce Pearl, Bruce Pearl. But it's like, it's too far. It's too far the other way. So, I don't know. I don't know. Keyshawn Hall, 32 points. Solid.
And everyone's saying, like, Auburn won. Like, even if we did, we didn't deserve it. Like, I get a win's a win and everything, and it changes, you know, some things as far as, like, your record and conference play. But, like, dude, I don't know, man.
Yeah, I mean, if I had to guess, I don't think he got it off. I said that in real time, and then Ferg's got a tweet up that looks pretty clear that it's still touching his fingertips. Yeah. Shouldn't have been in that situation. Don't blow a massive lead against a team that you're more talented than.
Dude, I just... I don't know what else to say, honestly. It's just...

Chapter 6: How did the referees influence the game's outcome?
If it was close, it had to go our way based on what happened the play before.
Bucky, what?
a big fan of buckyball but what bucky said the clock issue yeah because they had the clock review and he's saying that that shouldn't have happened because and i guess he's technically right that that shouldn't have happened yeah but that's not how it works no no it's not each individual call Each individual call. Oh, my gosh. Like, if you could argue to stop, it shouldn't have happened.
But you can't rule the decision based on that.
That's crazy. That's a wild statement. And I like Bucky. That is a wild statement, though. That's absolutely crazy. Apparently, in his post-game interview, he couldn't hear what was being asked because the student section was in his ears.
Yeah.
Screaming.
That's crazy. He's just saying that, like, the makeup call should happen. That's wild that he said that in an official press conference.
What? Are you kidding me? What?
