I cover the Broncos as a reporter for Mile High Sports. Joined alongside, as always, by Sarah Bettinger. He's the site expert over there at predominantlyorange.com. And we're back with another episode here today. Sarah, really kind of focusing in on Denver's second year players, right? The 2023 NFL draft class. A couple of players come to mind here in terms of what will a breakout season look like? What do they need to do in order to break out? And I think be remiss if we didn't start off with probably their top pick in last year's NFL draft. Marvin Mims set for a big role here in 2023 or 24, according to Broncos head coach Sean Payton. But a lot of Broncos fans are a little skeptical of what that may mean because they also heard Sean Payton say some things during the season last year, and yet we didn't see Marvin get enough touches that he should have gotten.
And Sean Payton took ownership of that. He and the coaching staff mentioning the fact that really it was them who kind of limited his role in his rookie season. And we saw glimpses of the best of what he's capable of doing in every possible regard. I mean, he was a Pro Bowl return specialist, was outstanding in kickoff and punt returns, made big plays when he got opportunities to do so for the offense. And I think we saw early in the season that positive trajectory that he was on. Remember the Washington game? where he had his only touchdown catch of the year, which is still crazy to think. If you told Cody and I or any of you listening that week two game against Washington, hey, Marvin Mims is going to catch a touchdown this week, but it's going to be the last one he has all season.
I think after the way we saw him play, we would have been like, you're insane because this guy's got to get involved. it just wasn't in the cards that we saw more involvement in the Chicago game as well. The big play to set the Broncos up for a game winner. I mean, it was on the right trajectory and things apparently just went off the rails. And I don't really know why, Cody, because the Broncos, it wasn't like they were just, you know, overflowing with, offensive playmakers last year, and it wasn't like they needed to eliminate Mims' snaps because he was making a ton of mistakes. It just felt like that aspect of the offense disappeared. But now with Jerry Judy traded to Cleveland, it feels like maybe the door is open back up for him to really emerge in his second season.
And that's the vibe that I really got from Sean Payton when they decided to make the move of trading Jerry to Cleveland. Is that, hey, this is a guy who's going to play a little bit more. And look, Sean even said, I think it was at the NFL Scout and Combine, he said, you're going to see a more confident player this upcoming season. So ideally, if we're going to see that, what will that look like? How can Sean Payton maximize Marvin Mims this upcoming year well Sarah I think first and foremost it's got to be relegated to a role where he's not just lined up in the slot right I think going back to what Sean has said historically like he wants his wide receivers to be able to line up anywhere because when you can do that you can play a multitude of different roles you can run a different route tree at these positions it increases your opportunities of making plays and
