I'm Cody Roark-Brock, who's a reporter for Mile High Sports. Joined alongside, as always, by Sarah Bettinger, site expert over there, predominantlyorange.com. Sarah, as we get closer. to the buildup for the NFL draft. We all know this is the week that the Broncos voluntary off season workouts. They've begun. There's not a lot that we're going to get from that, but we are one step closer, about 20 weeks away from the NFL season kicking off. And next week, obviously is a big week. The NFL draft will be here, but in the buildup to the draft, we'll focus on some of the, in-house items that this broncos roster has right now and really i think pass rusher has to be talked about a little bit more i think that there's a maybe question amongst broncos country as to what this group looks like is it good enough going into 2024 as is what is the plan should they maybe draft a guy 12th overall ideally we've discussed it here on the show
Denver feels very, very good about the three young guys that they have at the edge rusher position. And we all are going to start things off here, obviously, with Jonathan Cooper.
Jonathan Cooper, who has given the Broncos some of the best return on investment for a seventh-round pick, I think probably since Trevor Simeon, right, who became the starting quarterback once upon a time. So I don't know that there's been many better seventh-round picks in recent Broncos history, unless you count the flash in the pan, Cody. That was the Chad Kelly preseason stardom there. But all kidding aside, look, Jonathan Cooper has really proven himself to be one of those types of guys that you feel like you can build around culturally. I mean, his development has been phenomenal. As we oftentimes say, it's not always this straight up trajectory, but I feel like for Jonathan Cooper, it kind of has been that way.
You know, we saw glimpses his rookie year. We saw even more glimpses his second year. And then in his third year with his most expanded role yet, see him go out there eight and a half sacks leads the team. He was kind of, you know, he changed the number, kind of felt like he took on a different level of like, seriousness to the role in terms of okay yeah you you did your thing on special teams you came in the rotation and made a couple splash plays but what can you do on a more consistent basis I feel like we saw a huge step forward from him and he's one of those types of guys that you just feel like you you can count on week in and week out is his game perfect at this point no but he's somebody that I feel like he's he's got a really high floor at the position as long as he stays healthy
I think the best is yet to come here for Jonathan Cooper, though, right? But this is a big season for Coop because it is a contract year. Now, I remember going back to his rookie season. We were hearing it in minicamp. We were hearing it during training camp, like, who's this number 53 guy? Like, he's pressuring the quarterback, just high motor, just getting after guys.
