We just heard from Broncos head coach Sean Payton and general manager George Payton in Thursday's pre-draft press conference.
They gave us a lot of interesting tidbits, but nothing that tips their hand for what they plan to do next week when the Broncos are on the clock here. I'm Cody Rourke, Broncos reporter for Mile High Sports. Join alongside, as always, by Sarah Bettinger, site expert, predominantlyorange.com. George Payton, Sean Payton, as we all know, the collective brain trust who's going to be making decisions next week that will impact the state and the future of the Denver Broncos.
And the number one topic, as I said, I put it out there early on social media. I said, hey, what's the over under on quarterback questions? I put it at three and a half. Well, if you smash the over, you're a rich, rich person here waking up today. That was the primary topic of discussion in terms of seeing if Sean or George would give anything away about this year's quarterback class. Didn't really get a lot of insight into that as expected, but we do know how they feel about this year's quarterback class in general regarding and excluding specific names.
Which is that they think it's seven to eight deep, according to George Payton. And Cody, that number has increased from the last time we heard George Payton speak. I believe the last time he talked about the quarterback, he said five or six, or maybe he just said six. But now it's up to seven or eight. And so I think that, you know, there's... there may be a little something to that. Maybe the Broncos really do like the depth of this class. Certainly there are seven or eight quarterbacks that get routinely talked about when it comes to putting together Broncos mock drafts. Hey, you miss out on one of the guys that could go in the first round. You hear a lot about Spencer Rattler, who's generally considered the sixth guy, or maybe there's Michael Pratt and
Who could be this eighth guy potentially, Cody? I don't know who it could possibly be, but it does sound like from what George and Sean both conveyed, they have done tons of homework on all these quarterbacks. They've been flying all over the country, meeting with them. And remember, just remember this little tidbit here. Nobody knew about Sean Payton flying to Texas Tech to work out Patrick Mahomes. So don't think that you will hear everything in terms of who the Broncos are meeting with, where they're meeting with them. I think that's a significant detail there, Cody, is that we've heard some things like Michael Penix Jr. He's got a top 30 visit to the facility and had that already. J.J. McCarthy, they worked him out privately after his pro day.
But we're not necessarily going to hear about every single one of these guys and the Broncos interactions with them, which I think adds to the intrigue of this particular position group.
