What are the hosts’ first impressions of the new Adelaide Street Circuit layout?
I've been pretty vocal from day one that there's been differences spoken out on my
podcast. It was cool to have both the lucky dogs up there though, right? And I thought we might see if the podcast is still going next week actually after this one.
Hey everyone, welcome back to the Lucky Dogs podcast. We've got a little preview of the new Adelaide track. This is episode number 47? 47, that's right. Wow, I can count. And a few, look at you go. Yeah, pretty exciting. This is obviously a bit different where... How are we feeling about the new circuit? There's obviously a lot of history with the old circuit. I don't think,
like, the problem is, is you can't feel good about the new circuit right now, no matter how good it is, because the old circuit's been so amazing. So I think that's the hardest thing. If you're at a track like, you know, that... let's say QR, like, you know what I mean? Like the layout's not bad, but if you didn't update there, people are probably like, oh, I wonder what it's like, where I think everyone going into the changes at Adelaide is going to be a bit sceptical about it and going to not really like the change, but we're going to have a look through it and see. We brought Ains onto this one. She's coming on because we want all her knowledge on the track change and how it's going to affect you Ains out there.
But no, there's big changes because even the pit building, Ains is like, you just ask, where's the pit building?
Yeah, I'm like confused looking at the red outline. I'm like, wait, where were we last?
Well, the pits are now along that main road. So obviously there's the pits used to be. It's where Super 2 used to be. The pits used to be in the middle of the park, whereas now the pit building is now along one of the main roads.
Yep, yeah. The track is way bigger as well. Like that lap time will have to be. Well, they've run it on the sim, so it'll be interesting to try and find out what the lap time difference is. But the only thing that is going to be tough for us, and hopefully I am wrong, but generally every time someone designs a track these days, there's someone involved and someone giving advice. Like Scaife used to do it, give advice, and a lot of ex-drivers, and this is all around the world. But... The hardest thing is that we're implementing is that, you know, if you go to a track like, say, Tail and Bend, the Bend, for instance, they made that for LMP cars, motorbikes and us. But the problem is for our sort of racing, big, heavy car, no aero, those sort of tracks generally aren't the best for us because it makes it extremely hard for us to pass because we don't have the big, long braking zones where you sort of make the passes and it works for our car.
So... I just – looking at this new track, it's obviously for MotoGP and they've had to do that and they've had to change the track and give the runoff and everything to make it safe for them. But I don't think it's going to produce as good a racing as what we've had there.
Yeah. There's a couple of reasons for it, obviously, and I think to bring the MotoGP, I think they've been the – you know, they're trying to appease those guys more than, you know, they're trying to bring MotoGP to a street circuit. So it's a first step, which is pretty big. But Scafie has been involved on this circuit and I've actually had the pleasure to work with him on a circuit prior.
How will the relocation of the pit building and track widening affect race strategy?
with with scaphy and he operates at a very very high level
when it comes to
this stuff like incredible knowledge um you know it was to do with the perth circuit he was you know he had all these different corner profiles from different tracks and he actually had them on these clear laminate sheets and was you know piecing different parts of you know the good parts of different tracks together it was actually really cool to see him in action i actually shot him a text afterwards and was really impressed on how his work ethic was. And I remember Paul Morris used to say that he used to operate a really high level, but to see him outside of, you know, the commentary stuff and, you know, to see his brain to the work was really cool.
