Thank you so much for listening to the Neurodiverse Love Podcast. Welcome back to the Neurodiverse Love Podcast. Today I have a returning guest who also has presented at the Neurodiverse Love Conference this past year in 2025. And she is one of the four couples, or she is a partner of one of the four couples in the Neurodiverse Love docuseries. And it's Dr. Jesse Mahoney. And Jesse, thank you so much for being here today. I'm delighted to be here. Fun. We're we're gonna have a great conversation. And I know um you Had the guts to do a Tedx talk. And that's always been like a dream of mine, but I don't have the guts to do it because I don't think I could memorize a speech, right? If I could have the teleprompter or I could have the index cards, I would do it.
Mona Kay 1:47
But I I don't have a good memory like that. But your TEDx talk was what would love do? And why now, right? And so I'd love for you to first introduce yourself and then share kind of why. Why did you decide to pick that subject? So
Jesse Mahoney 2:07
I um am Jesse Mahoney and I'm a uh pediatrician and a physician coach and a mindfulness yoga teacher um and I lead a lot of retreats and now I guess I'm a TEDx speaker too. I actually do give a lot of keynote talks. So this wasn't totally out of my um my wheelhouse. But um I really I gave actually a talk about what Woodlove do at a Women of Dartmouth summit in like twenty twenty one and they uh asked me to give an eight minute talk, which I didn't have any idea how one did that. And I decided to do this what would love do and I'll talk a bit about the the reasoning behind that. And when I finished that talk, I said, Oh my gosh, like that should really be a TED talk. I actually knew nothing about TED Talks and they're very um I didn't know you had to memorize things.
Jesse Mahoney 3:01
I didn't know that, you know, they have sort of a formula to them and a process or anything like that. But what came out of that talk, which is actually not at all the TED talk I ended up giving, um, it was focused a lot on um this question, what would love do? and how it had gotten me through this really challenging um period where my husband had developed um uh quite a few mental health issues that ultimately were likely related to his neurodiversity, which was undiagnosed, or our neurodiversity, his neurodivergence, which was undiagnosed, and he had been Um, in a work environment that wasn't a great fit for a while and trying to fit in and trying to do all the things and Um it had led us to a really challenging spot, and so in that

um original talk I talked about how um, what would love do and how that had helped me move through that originally and how it helped me change careers and how it helped me with my children and how um it helped me also get through, you know, the pandemic and all of these things. And so that was the original talk, which was much more lighthearted and I actually did kind of have to memorize it, but it was made up at in the pro in the moment, really. Um and the stakes were very different. Uh so since then I had this idea that I wanted to do it, but I didn't really have a plan to do it. And so I actually reached out to someone to help me and you will appreciate this, but this person encouraged me to do a different topic because people wouldn't this wouldn't resonate.
