New York City! He addressed, among other topics... The recent punishment handed down to the Clippers, looming league expansion, NBA Europe plans, the Trailblazers' future in Portland, and a couple of other things. I thought, hey, I'll jump on with all of y'all, go through some of the big talking points, share my thoughts on what Silver talked about. Get in, get out. Call it a day. Call it a night. So I watched the whole thing, obviously. Silver talked for about 35 minutes to reporters. He was his usual self, I would say. You know, calm, cool, collected, boringly collected. Come on, Silver. A little song and dance off the top would be nice, right? A joke or two? Something. Give us a little pizzazz. But no, he plays it by the book.
But did say some interesting things that we'll unpack here. It was great to see all of our old friends, though, in attendance. Everybody's suited and booted, too. It was like, ooh, these are the big New York City meetings. Got to wear my blazer to this one. But Hall of Famer David Aldridge in attendance. He asked a question. Zach Lowe, he was a little dressed down, if we're being honest. Vincent Goodwill. Jake Fisher was there. Pablo Torre was in attendance. He was wearing some denim, denim, and denim. But that was just fun. It's like, oh, yeah, all the reporters. So, again, let's get into a couple of the things. That Silver talked about. I got like five or six sort of like key points here. I'll share some of his, you know, actual quotes.
I'm not going to go word for word and read you the whole transcription. But the first one and the big topic that everybody was interested to hear Silver finally address was the Clippers and Steve Ballmer. And Silver said, quote, I don't think in any way we've done permanent damage to this franchise, but there's no question this is a setback for the team. You know, asked about this idea, this balance of like punishing the Clippers. but also not killing the Clippers fans and just completely, you know, throwing a grenade on their future. He said, Silver, the ultimate goal in terms of these types of sanctions is to ensure that other teams don't engage in this type of behavior in the future. So there has to be something beyond suspensions and financial consequences.
And that's why we get into the five picks that they got docked for the Capser Convention. Multiple times. Silver said, you know, we had a lot of talks about rules. It's like he just sat down all these owners like they were school children to go over the rules of the classroom once again. He brought that up a number of times. He started with it, just this reinforcing the rules. A bunch of follow-ups to this, of course. He said he relied on the precedent in the ruling pointing at how the Minnesota Timberwolves uh they were docked the five picks and you know eventually got some back he didn't get into any idea of like whether or not the Clippers would get picks back for playing nice but he added And he made sure to note that he had no inkling, to use his words, that any other teams are doing stuff like the Clippers were just busted for doing.
Salary cap circumvention. He doesn't think it's happening with any other squads. Hall of Famer DA, he did ask, hey, who the hell in these meetings was representing the Clippers? And the answer was no one.
