Chapter 1: What dangerous winter storm is affecting the northeastern U.S.?
Live from NPR News, I'm Dale Willman. Millions of people are in the path of a dangerous winter storm that's bringing blizzard conditions to states across the northeastern U.S. at this hour. NPR's Shondalese Duster has more.
National Weather Service meteorologist Cody Snell said during a briefing Sunday that there could be at least 18 inches to 2 feet of snow up through Massachusetts.
That's where we're going to see the major impacts from snowfall with this system. That includes heavy snowfall rates, which is going to reduce visibility and accumulate on roads very quickly.
Emergencies have been declared in multiple states, including Delaware, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, and Massachusetts. A travel ban has also been issued in New York City. All bridges, highways, and streets in the city will be closed to traffic through noon Monday. Officials are warning those in a storm's path to stay inside. Shondalese Duster, NPR News.
More than 60,000 power outages, meanwhile, have been reported just in New Jersey. President Trump is now imposing a 15 percent global tariff on most imported goods, following the rejection by the Supreme Court of his existing import duties. And U.S. Trade Representative Jameson Greer says the administration will also be able to use other trade laws using national security justifications.
Things that people might think are ho-hum commodities, they actually become quite strategic when it comes to national security. So whether it's lumber for housing or cars and the factories and the ecosystem that go along with them for transportation, these are the types of things we need to have a strong economy, have a strong industrial base to prepare us for times of war and other things.
Greer was speaking Sunday on ABC's This Week program. The International Criminal Court today begins several days of hearings to determine whether former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte should stand trial for crimes against humanity. Michael Sullivan has her reports.
The 80-year-old Duterte will not be physically present for the start of the proceedings, the court accepting his request not to appear in person, citing a letter he sent to the court claiming he was, quote, old, tired, and frail. He was arrested in Manila in March, and ICC prosecutors...
have charged him with three counts of crimes against humanity in connection with his war on drugs in both Davao City as mayor and countrywide as president from 2016 through 2022. Human rights groups say thousands of people were killed during that period, with some putting the number in the tens of thousands. Duterte denies the charges against him. For NPR News, I'm Michael Sullivan in Chiang Rai.
