Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Nora Rahm. U.S. Central Command today announced the first reported U.S. casualties from the joint U.S.-Israeli operation against Iran. Three service members were killed. Five others were seriously wounded. A U.S. official not authorized to speak publicly says all were serving in the U.S. Army in Kuwait.
Israeli authorities say at least nine people were killed in an Iranian missile attack in central Israel. Iran says an interim committee will lead the country following the death of the country's supreme leader. NPR's Greg Myrie reports.
Iranian officials say the interim committee will consist of three members. President Massoud Pazeshkian, the head of the judiciary, and another senior official. The country's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was killed in an airstrike at his compound in the capital, Tehran.
Israel says it simultaneously bombed three meetings filled with senior political and military figures at the start of the massive air campaign Saturday. Iran's Assembly of Experts, consisting of 88 senior Islamic clerics, is supposed to choose the country's supreme leader and may well do so. But given the current crisis, the interim committee will lead for now. Greg Myhre, NPR News, Washington.
A senior White House official tells NPR President Trump says the new potential leaders in Iran have indicated they want to talk with him, and he plans to do that eventually. No timeline was provided. Iran's foreign ministry spokesman spoke today to NPR. Esmaili Obagai said Iran will continue to fight foreign aggression and foreign domination.
The Iranians have shown that when confronted with a foreign aggression situation, foreign domination, they will appear united and they will fight for their freedom, for their independence, and for their dignity and sovereignty. He said the Iranian people have no problem with the American people.
They believe this is the U.S. administration's war of choice. The U.S. military said today it struck an Iranian warship at the start of its attacks yesterday.
