Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Janine Hurst. As the U.S.
How is public opinion shifting about the U.S. war in Iran and MAGA voters' support?
war in Iran enters its sixth month, there are growing concerns in Congress over how it's going. This as the U.S. hasn't attacked Tehran in two days. Ampere's Mara Liason has more.
The war has been unpopular all along, but new polling last week shows that the war has become less popular even among voters who self-identify as MAGA, as Trump's core supporters. There's a new Politico poll that showed the number of MAGA voters who want the war to continue dropped significantly. by 13 points since May. And even though Trump said over a year ago when he first bombed Iran that Iran's nuclear enrichment facilities were, quote, totally obliterated, he said at another point that the war has been a, quote, total and complete victory, 100%, the war is still going on. NPR's Mara Eliason reporting.
Why is the Trump administration ending temporary protected status for hundreds of thousands of Haitians?
The Trump administration is set to end the temporary legal status of hundreds of thousands of Haitians living in the U.S. The move, which could come as soon as tomorrow, could mean deportation. NPR's Adrienne Felido reports many fear being sent back to a country full of violence.
Last month, the Supreme Court allowed the administration to end temporary protected status for 350,000 Haitians and 6,000 Syrians. TPS has allowed them to live and work in the U.S. because of dangerous conditions in their countries. The U.S. is ending TPS for Haitians despite acknowledging the dangers. Much of Haiti is controlled by armed gangs. Josiane Valsaint got TPS in 2010. Her 10- and 12-year-olds were born in San Diego and sing in the church choir.
And it's painful to say that it's our country, but we can go back.
Advocates say if Congress doesn't intervene, tens of thousands of U.S.
What risks do Haitian families and U.S. citizen children face if TPS ends?
citizen children could be separated from their parents, who'd rather leave them behind than risk their lives in Haiti. Adrian Fledio, NPR News.
Israel's military continues to carry out mass raids in the occupied West Bank, arresting dozens of Palestinians. This comes after a deadly confrontation that left two Israelis and four Palestinians dead, as NPR's Emily Fang reports.
Videos on Friday show Israeli settlers from an illegal settlement in the West Bank confronting residents in a Palestinian village, sparking a gunfight.
What happened during the recent Israeli raids and deadly West Bank confrontation?
The Israeli army has sealed off the area and set up checkpoints. The Israeli advocacy group Physicians for Human Rights says two Palestinian women were forced to give birth inside cars because of those checkpoints blocking roads to hospitals. There have also been a wave of retaliatory attacks against more Palestinian villages. The mayor of the village of Kusra says a mosque there was set on fire and Hebrew slogans of revenge sprayed on its walls. In Israel, initial blanket outrage over the deaths of the two Israelis has turned into questions about why the settlers were in an area off-limits to Israeli citizens. Emily Fang, NPR News, Tel Aviv. Who did Maine Democrats nominate to replace Graham Platner and why does it matter?
Democrats in Maine officially selected a nominee to replace Graham Platner, who dropped out earlier this month after being accused of rape, an allegation he denies. Former State Senate President Troy Jackson is the new nominee to face incumbent Republican Susan Collins in November. The Tour de France ended today with a Slovenian cyclist taking home his fifth title in the famous race that was shortened in the final stage. Empire Chandelier's Duster has more.
How did this year's Tour de France finish and which films led the weekend box office?
Tadej Pogacar won his fifth Tour de France on Sunday, completing the race in just under 74 hours. He crossed the finish line of the final stage of the race just before 8 o'clock p.m. local time. Pogacar thanked his fans and supporters after the race. He also said the win feels incredible.
Yeah. Seven tours already and seven times on podium and five wins. It's something that you wouldn't even maybe write in a storybook.
The route for the Tour de France's final stage was changed and shortened this year. Security and police for the event were reassigned to assist with wildfires raging in the southwest portion of the country. Shandalise Duster, NPR News.
